The Breakthrough Prize, translated into Russian as the "Breakthrough Prize", is awarded for achievements in various fields of science to scientists who are at the initial stage of their path in the field of science. Estet-portal will tell you about the winners of this year's award, as well as the scientific achievements for which they were awarded the Breakthrough Prize. In particular, the lion's share of our attention will be paid to the latest breakthroughs in the field of medicine.

Recently, the Breakthrough Prize scientific awards ceremony took place. Each of the 12 scientists received three million dollars. This award is given to those researchers who have just started their scientific path.

We offer details of what scientific discoveries in the field of medicine young professionals received recognition and monetary rewards in the form of an impressive amount. The Fundamental Physics Prize was established by Yuri Milner, a former physicist and now – internet entrepreneur. A year later, Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin, and Ann Wojicki joined him. The newly minted team decided to create a special award in the biomedical industry Breakthrough Prize.

American Jennifer Doudna and German Emmanuel Charpentier have received a biomedical prize for their discovery of the Crispr/Cas9 mechanism, which is able to protect bacteria from virus attacks. This system has the function of detecting viruses by DNA, and then releases the Cas9 enzyme, whose work is similar to scissors that cut the genetic material of the aggressor. Researchers have found that Crispr/Cas9 can help rewrite defective human DNA and replace damaged genes with healthy ones.

Four biologists from France received awards for their achievements.

Aleem Louis Benabid was awarded for his development of the Deep Brain Stimulation technique. The method he found was a revolutionary discovery in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

American scientists David Ellis, Gary Ruvkun, and Victor Embros have distinguished themselves with their work in the field of gene regulation.

The founder of the award calls its main goal to popularize scientific researchers and give scientists the status of real stars. But, despite all the positives of the award, the Breakthrough Prize is often criticized for the irrational use of large funds from the funds. According to opponents of such generous awards as three million for each of the scientists, it would be more logical to invest part of the available funds in research projects.

There is also a proposal to issue grants from the Yuri Milner Foundation to scientists living in poor countries of the world.

Estet-portal wishes scientists success in their endeavors and, of course, new discoveries!
