Исследование мирового значения: применение более высоких доз БОТОКС®

Botulinum Therapy is one of the most successful areas of modern aesthetic medicine. The muscle relaxant properties of botulinum toxin type A have been used in cosmetology for many years to reduce the signs of age-related changes in the face.

However, until recently, the botulinum therapy procedure had one single, but significant drawback – this is the duration of the effect.

A study on the use of higher doses of BOTOX®, organized by Allergan, has opened up new possibilities for botulinum therapy.

Exclusively for estet-portal.com, Allergan's international trainer, dermatovenereologist, cosmetologist, doctor of the highest category Igor Rudenko spoke in detail about the results of a study of higher doses of botulinum toxin.

I.R.: The fact is that one of the most frequent complaints of patients is the short duration of the effect after the botulinum therapy procedure.

However, the main reason for refraining from using higher doses of BOTOX® preparations, which could give long-lasting results, was the lack of an evidence base regarding the safety of their use.

Allergan always invests in science, trying to find answers to the pressing questions of modern aesthetic medicine.

Therefore, a decision was made to conduct a scientific study on the safety and efficacy of higher doses of BOTOX®.

What Botulinum Toxin Can Do: The Unique Uses of Botox®

The study involved 233 patients who were injected with BOTOX® into the bridge of the nose at a dose of 20.40, 60 and 80 units, respectively.

Please tell us about the results of the study on the use of higher doses of BOTOX®

I.R.: At week 24, among patients who received 20 units of BOTOX® in the bridge of the nose, only 16% of participants maintained the effect of botulinum therapy.

In turn, among patients who received 40 units of BOTOX®, the number of participants having the effect of botulinum therapy at week 24 was as much as 32%, that is, twice as high.

Thus, in these two groups of participants, we observe a direct proportional relationship between the doses of BOTOX preparations® and the duration of the effect of the procedure.

However, in the 60 U and 80 U BOTOX groups®, this relationship no longer existed.

The proportion of respondents who maintained the effect of botulinum therapy at week 24 was 30% and 38% in the groups administered 60 U and 80 U, respectively. That is, the results were practically comparable to those obtained in the study of 40 units.

From this it is concluded that the dose of BOTOX® 40 IU is a satiating, full dosage of drugs.

The study concluded that the dose of BOTOX® 40 IU is a satiating, full dosage of drugs.

It only remained to find out how safe it was.

Results of the safety profile study of new doses of BOTOX®

I.R.: The safety of the 40 IU trial in patients exceeded all best expectations. No serious side effects have been observed.

The safety profile of BOTOX® 40 U is comparable to that of 20 U. Moreover, the only complication in the form of brow ptosis during the experiment occurred in a patient who was injected with 20 IU of BOTOX®.

No complications were observed in the study of the safety profile of the 40 U dose.

In the 80 U BOTOX® group of patients, a case of upper eyelid closure was noted, which is regarded as a serious side effect. But, I repeat, it was in the group that was injected with as many as 80 units. In a safety study of 40 IU, no such side effects were noted.

What are the contraindications for using high doses of BOTOX®

I.R.: It depends on what we call high dose. After all, we say "high dose" when we assume that its use entails a fairly heavy range of side effects.

The purpose of the study of the use of new doses of BOTOX®– 40, 60 AND 80 units was the definition of whether they are really "high".

The purpose of the study of the use of new doses of BOTOX drugs®– 40, 60 AND 80 units, – there was a determination as to whether they were truly "tall".

The results that have been obtained indicate that the dose of 40 IU is not high, but vice versa – it is satiating, optimal, and at the same time has a good safety profile.
