How to get rid of wrinkles with hypertonicity of the circular muscle of the eye

Eyes – the mirror of one's heart. Surely, this phrase is familiar to every person, because it is on the upper part of the face that people first of all pay attention when meeting a new person. And it is precisely for the purpose of correcting mimic wrinkles around the eyes that patients so often turn to a beautician. Hypertonicity of the circular muscle of the eye – one of the main reasons for the formation of mimic wrinkles around the eyes. The circular muscle of the eye is one of the most active muscles located on the human face, which is why wrinkles around the eyes begin to form already at a young age. At the same time, it is the hypertonicity of the circular muscle of the eye that is best corrected using botulinum toxin.

Structure and functions of the orbicular muscle of the eye

The circular muscle of the eye in Latin is called m. orbicularis oculi and is located under the skin that covers the anterior sections of the orbit. The orbicular muscle of the eye consists of three parts:

  • orbital part (p. orbitalis) starts from the medial ligament of the eyelid, the frontal process of the upper jaw and the nasal part of the frontal bone. Further, this part of the circular muscle of the eye runs along the upper and lower edges of the orbit, thus forming a muscle ring. The internal muscle bundles in the region of the lateral ligament of the eyelid form the lateral suture of the eyelids. The function of the orbital part of the circular muscle of the eye – narrowing of the palpebral fissure and smoothing of the transverse folds of the forehead;
  • the eyelid part (p. palpebralis) is located directly under the skin of the eyelids and continues the orbital part of the orbicular muscle of the eye. Its two parts – upper and lower, start from the upper and lower edges of the medial ligament of the eyelid and go to the lateral corner of the eye, where they are attached to the lateral ligament of the eyelid. The function of the secular part of the circular muscle of the eye – closure of the palpebral fissure;
  • the lacrimal part (p. lacrimalis) starts from the posterior crest of the lacrimal bone, covers the lacrimal sac on both sides and intertwines with the muscle bundles of the secular part of the circular muscle of the eye. The lacrimal part of the orbicular muscle of the eye expands the lacrimal sac.

How facial expression changes with hypertonicity of the circular muscle of the eye

Hypertonicity of the orbicular muscle of the eye changes the overall expression of the face, participating directly in the formation of wrinkles around the eye. Depending on the hypertonicity of which part of the circular muscle of the eye prevails, mimic wrinkles are formed in certain areas. With hypertonicity of the lateral part of the circular muscle of the eye, the so-called "crow's feet" will form; -  small mimic wrinkles in the lateral corners of the eyes. There are usually several, but it depends on the individual characteristics of each person. When hypertonicity of the lateral and lower parts of the circular muscle of the eye is combined, mimic wrinkles are formed on the lateral side of the eye, as well as in the region of the lower portion of the circular muscle of the eye, and are always located perpendicular to the location of the muscle fibers. With hypertonicity of the upper portion of the circular muscle of the eye, mimic wrinkles of the upper eyelid are formed, which looks like a kind of "fan". If  hypertonicity affects all parts of the circular muscle of the eye – visualized and "fan" mimic wrinkles on the upper eyelid, wrinkles of the lower eyelid, and wrinkles of the lateral part of the orbicular muscle of the eye.

Peculiarities of botulinum toxin administration in hypertonicity of the orbicular muscle of the eye

Correction of hypertonicity of the circular muscle of the eye with botulinum toxin has its own characteristics, depending on which part of the muscle hypertonicity prevails. With hypertonicity of the lateral part of the circular muscle of the eye, botulinum toxin must be injected into the zone of hypertonicity, retreating 1 cm from the orbit of the eye. In this case, the dose of the drug is selected individually, on average from 5 to 15 IU at one point. With a combination of hypertonicity of the lateral and lower parts of the circular muscle of the eye, botulinum toxin is injected in a higher dilution into the zones of hypertonicity and rather superficially. In case of hypertonicity of the upper part of the circular muscle of the eye, botulinum toxin is injected subcutaneously at a dose of 2 to 5 units to a point 1 cm above the orbit of the eye along an imaginary line drawn from the ala of the nose through the pupil. Correction of hypertonicity of only the lower part of the circular muscle of the eye must be carried out by means of & nbsp; subcutaneous injection of 1-2 units of botulinum toxin 1 cm down from the orbit.  With the help of botulinum toxin, hypertonicity of the orbicular muscle of the eye can be eliminated and the eyes can be restored to their former youthful and radiant appearance.
