Increased oiliness of the skin is usually associated with inevitable blackheads and acne problems, however, oily skin – this is one of the variants of the norm, just this type of skin requires appropriate care. With proper handling, oily skin retains smoothness longer and does not bother with early wrinkles, however, during the period of hormonal adjustment – in puberty, during pregnancy, from other causes that cause fluctuations in hormonal levels, oily skin increases and can cause many cosmetic problems.

Why does oily skin occur

One of the main incentives to increase the production of sebum is the increased production of male sex hormones – androgens. Directly on the work of the sebaceous gland is affected by dihydrotestosterone, under the influence of which the cells of the sebaceous gland begin to mature faster and multiply intensively. At the same time, the sebaceous gland increases in size and rapidly produces an increased amount of sebum.

Studies have shown that increased oily skin can be explained not only by high levels of testosterone, but also by increased sensitivity of some sebaceous glands to it, as well as insufficient activity of 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase enzymes that regulate testosterone production and its effect on cells skin.

Estrogen metabolism also affects the functioning of the sebaceous glands, and recently data have been obtained that the skin itself is able to synthesize steroid hormones from cholesterol and dehydroepiandrosterone, while sebocytes are responsible for the synthesis of androgens, and keratinocytes – for their destruction.

In addition, certain substances secreted by the nerve endings of the skin can stimulate the production of sebum. Many remedies used for acne also have an irritating effect on it, because of which the sebaceous glands will receive a signal to increase their work and an increased oily skin develops.

Recently, evidence has been obtained that the work of the sebaceous glands is influenced by certain hormones (for example, adrenocorticotropic), the level of which increases in the body during stress, so that the important role of mental factors in the development of acne becomes apparent.

Thus, the increased oiliness of the skin in each person depends on his individual characteristics of the organism, and therefore, in order to select the most effective combination of cosmetic or medicinal products, in each individual case, it is necessary to choose substances with a different mechanism of action.
