The problem of excess weight is one of the most urgent for people with type 2 diabetes. Failures in the work of the human hormonal system affect the work of the whole organism, including metabolism. The whole secret of gaining excess weight is that hormonal disruptions only increase appetite, and whether to succumb to the temptation and eat your favorite cakes in kilograms – personal choice of each person. Scientists from the American Diabetes Association decided to take this issue seriously and compiled a program whose main goal was to maintain muscle mass while losing excess weight.

A new program for the treatment of obesity due to diabetes

The results of a study have been published in which a group of study patients who are overweight on the background of type 2 diabetes mellitus, for 5 years  changed their lives according to the "Why wait" program; ("Why wait?"). The essence of the program was such a combination of diet, physical activity and drug therapy for diabetes mellitus, in which excess weight would be lost as much as possible with minimal loss of muscle mass. Patients were followed for 5 years, as another important point of the study was the focus on the return of lost weight. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to quickly regain lost weight after a person stops exercising and dieting. That is why scientists took into account the long-term factors of weight loss.

Diet will help to lose weight on the background of diabetes

In the program "Why Wait" participants were offered a special balanced diet that would help to successfully lose excess weight without losing muscle mass. The nutritional value for women was 1500 calories per day, for men – 1800 calories per day. At the same time, the daily intake of carbohydrates was limited to 40% of the total daily diet, the amount of protein increased to 2 g/kg of the total body weight per day. The intake of saturated fat and table salt was also limited, while the amount of monounsaturated fatty acids and fiber in the daily diet was increased. Liquid meals and snacks were mandatory in the patients' diet. According to the results of the study, in order to fully adapt to the new menu, obese participants in the study

What kind of physical activity should be used to treat obesity

Physical activity is an essential component of any weight loss program. In "Why Wait" an individual training program was developed for the participants, which was aimed primarily at gradual & nbsp; improving the flexibility of obese participants. Yoga and stretching classes were the basis of all training. In addition, the training program included exercises that improve the endurance and strength of the participants: exercises on simulators, walking, swimming, dancing, and more. The increase in physical activity was smooth and gradual: during the first month, patients exercised no more than 40 minutes 4 times a week, and by the end of the third month, the duration of training was 60 minutes 6 days a week.

How to combine medication for diabetes and weight loss

Correction of drug therapy, as well as the impact on the psychological state of the patient are mandatory components  any weight management program for patients with diabetes. In the program "Why wait" endocrinologists, having studied the medical records and the hormonal profile of each subject, individually selected drugs, changing antihyperglycemic drugs to those that would contribute to weight loss. Patients attended daily trainings and seminars on the problem of obesity that occurs against the background of diabetes mellitus. One of the important goals of the Why Wait program is there was a stabilization of the emotional state of the patients.

Cure obesity really – about it  study results say

According to the results of the study, after the first three months of participation in the program, on average, patients lost 9.7% of their initial body weight. At the same time, the loss of muscle mass was only 18%, in contrast to the usual loss of about 25%. A huge achievement for obese diabetic patients has been to reduce the use of medications by more than 50%. By the end of the first year of the study, the patients were divided into two  groups: 53% of patients were able to maintain the lost weight  at least 7% of the original during the year, and 47%, respectively, failed. The study found that glycosylated hemoglobin and triglyceride levels are factors associated with weight gain,

Thus, the results of a study by American scientists suggest that the program "Why wait" can become a lifeline for patients who have been fighting for many years not only with their illness, but also with its consequences, such as & nbsp; obesity. "The new program will help you lose more than 7% of excess weight after just one year, while retaining as much muscle mass as possible," the researchers conclude.
