Sycosis is one of the few skin conditions that are predominantly male. As a result of neuro-endocrine disorders in the body, the patient changes the sensitivity of the follicles located on the scalp – in the area where the mustache and beard grow.  At the same time, the saprophytic staphylococcal flora is activated and pustular disease develops. The skin of the face is so disfigured by the activity of the infectious agent that patients often become severely depressed and require appropriate therapy.

Clinical manifestations of sycosis and risk factors for its development

Increased sensitivity of facial skin follicles provokes the activation of Staphylococcus aureus, which enters the body through skin lesions. Cuts during inaccurate shaving, damage to the skin on the upper surface of the wings of the nose when pulling hair with tweezers can provoke bacterial inflammation of the skin.

In women, sycosis may appear in the area of the eyebrows – when they are carelessly plucked without proper skin treatment. In the area above the upper lip, sycosis is often caused by chronic rhinitis, due to which the skin is constantly wet and loosened. Areas with long hair are rarely affected by sycosis.

Symptoms that suggest sycosis in a patient

The disease begins with a purulent lesion of the follicles, and folliculitis is manifested by small disc-shaped foci.  The peculiarity of the course of sycosis is that its primary manifestations in the form of inflamed foci from the follicles can appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly. But without treatment, the inflamed areas will very soon reappear, and the disease will take a protracted course. Signs of sycosis:

  • skin is severely inflamed;
  • inflamed lesions quickly spread to healthy skin;
  • facial skin looks edematous, bothers with burning and itching, painful when touched;
  • the sensitivity of the affected area of the skin of the face increases;
  • there are rashes in the form of many bright red pustules located very close to each other.

The peculiarity of the course of sycosis is that the pustules that have arisen quickly shrink and secrete pus on the skin, because of which it becomes covered with dirty yellow crusts, and weeping inflamed skin is visible in the places where they fall off. Such a process makes the skin of the face extremely unattractive and untidy, making it difficult to shave, so among patients with sycosis, depression and severe psychological disorders are not uncommon, requiring special therapy.

Treatment of sycosis and complementary strengthening therapy

A patient with sycosis should know that the treatment of this disease is long, requiring strict adherence to all doctor's recommendations, not only on the use of drugs, but also on lifestyle.

In sycosis, both local and systemic antibiotic therapy, disinfectant lotions for exacerbations of the rash, treatment of foci with aniline dyes are recommended. All patients undergo therapy that relieves nervous disorders, it is recommended to take vitamins and immune-strengthening agents.

It is very important to remember that non-compliance with a hypoallergenic diet with a complete exclusion of alcohol and a violation of the antibiotic regimen leads to the development of resistance  and more subsequent problems with the choice of a drug that can fight staphylococcus aureus.
