During rest, work, physical activity and even during sleep, each person does not stop doing one thing – breathe. Even small children know that the air – it is something without which one cannot live. But few people think about what is with the air in our body & nbsp; not only vital oxygen is supplied. Small, but very dangerous viruses hover in the environment, which, penetrating into the human body, under certain conditions, can provoke the development of many pathological processes in it. Viral conjunctivitis is one of the most common types of conjunctivitis, which has its own characteristics.

Characteristic symptoms and treatments for viral conjunctivitis

More than half of all inflammatory processes of the mucous membrane of the eyelids and the anterior part of the eyeballs are of a viral nature. About 500 types of viruses that can cause pathological processes in the human body can affect the eyes. Viral conjunctivitis can occur in the form of both episodic diseases and epidemic outbreaks. Attention is drawn to the fact that viral infections almost always develop against the background of reduced immunity, when the human body is hardly able to defend itself. There are many types of viral conjunctivitis, but most often the development of pathology is provoked by adenoviruses and herpes viruses.

Features of viral conjunctivitis caused by adenoviruses

Adenoviruses are capable of causing two clinical forms of viral conjunctivitis: pharyngoconjunctival fever and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. Pharyngoconjunctival fever mainly affects young children. The development of conjunctivitis is preceded by the appearance of symptoms of pharyngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis and rhinitis with an increase in body temperature to febrile values. Conjunctivitis develops somewhat later, both unilateral and bilateral eye damage can occur. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is more severe and prolonged, but at the end of the disease, the patient develops immunity. With this form, bilateral eye damage occurs with involvement of the cornea in the pathological process.

Features of viral conjunctivitis caused by herpesviruses

The causative agents of herpetic conjunctivitis are herpes simplex viruses. This form of viral conjunctivitis also occurs more often in childhood, the disease is characterized by a long and sluggish course with a tendency to relapse. There are three forms of herpetic conjunctivitis:

  • catarrhal form: the course of the disease is stormy, hyperemia and swelling of the conjunctiva are pronounced, while discharge from the eyes is mucous and scanty;
  • the follicular form is characterized by the appearance of follicles on the conjunctiva of the lower eyelid and a transitional fold, which is also characteristic of adenoviral conjunctivitis;
  • in the vesicular-ulcerative form, rashes of herpetic vesicles are observed on the conjunctiva and the edges of the eyelid, in place of which erosions or ulcers are formed over time, covered with films.

Methods of treatment of adenovirus and herpesvirus conjunctivitis

Treatment of viral conjunctivitis depends, first of all, on which virus provoked the pathology. Common to the treatment of all conjunctivitis is the appointment of drugs of general and local action. With adenoviral conjunctivitis, it is recommended to prescribe vitamin therapy, general strengthening drugs, as well as topical use of antimetabolites, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, mast cell membrane stabilizers and glucocorticosteroids in the form of eye drops or ointments. When the cornea is damaged, drugs are prescribed that improve its regeneration. Treatment of herpetic conjunctivitis involves the appointment of antiviral and symptomatic therapy, it is also important to recommend to the patient instillations with ointments containing acyclovir placed behind the eyelids.
