Avocado – extremely useful fruit. It contains many useful substances and vitamins, thanks to which it has gained popularity in cosmetology. Experts advise everyone to include avocados in their diet.
Researchers say an avocado a day can lower blood cholesterol levels. Eating avocados also helps regulate blood fats associated with heart disease, even in people who are obese.
Scientists claim that by eating avocados daily, a person replaces the unhealthy fats in their diet with more "healthy" ones.
Lead author of the study – Penny Kris-Etherton of the American Heart Association committee said: "The avocado is not a hot item because it's not cheap at certain times of the year. However, most people don't know how to include it in their diet. But it can be added to salads, sandwiches, protein-rich foods (such as chicken or fish), eaten with vegetables or as a meal on its own.
In the study, 45 normal weight, overweight, and obese patients followed three different cholesterol-lowering diets: low-fat diets without avocados, medium-fat diets without avocados, and medium-fat diets with one avocado a day.
Scientists used Hass avocados in the study. Two weeks prior to starting the above diet, participants followed a typical American diet (34% calories from fat, 51% calories from carbohydrates, and 16% calories from protein).
The study lasted 5 weeks. The findings led the scientists to conclude that eating avocados helped lower low-density lipoprotein, the so-called "bad" cholesterol.
Avocado consumption also improved blood test results, including blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Apart from monounsaturated fatty acids, avocados also contain beneficial substances such as phytosterols and fiber.
