How often do you think that your mind has become less "sharp" and your memory has begun to fail? Why was it possible to learn a bunch of material on the night before the session, but now it’s hard to remember what date the trip to the theater is scheduled for? Perhaps the reason lies in your work.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have found that professions that include teaching or managing personnel develop memory and thinking even in 70-year-old men and women.

Scientists call the professions of doctors, lawyers and teachers the most useful for the intellectual development of a person.

According to new research, representatives of these professions, even in old age, retain their sharpness of mind. In general, there is no secret – it is this kind of work that constantly keeps the brain in suspense – a person is constantly improving his memory and skills.

Scientists tested the memory, brain speed and general ability to think in 1066 people. Using statistical models, they analyzed how each person's work affected test scores.

Professor Ian Deary from the University of Edinburgh said: "The results of this study allow us to add another factor to those already known to us (not smoking, being physically fit, active and knowing several languages) that affect our brain abilities in old age ".

Understanding how and why our intellectual abilities and, consequently, intellectual development change with age – this is a very important question that scientists are now looking for an answer to.

"The relationship between the work we do throughout our lives and our health is very important and complex, so the more we can learn about the factors that affect human cognition, the more effective ways we can develop to preserve them in the future." ", – scientists explained.
