Chin dimple – usually a dominant genetic trait. It appears during embryological development for one of the following reasons: incomplete fusion of structures in the area of the mental symphysis or a large distance between the mental muscles.

Features and available methods of chin dimple correction
There are differences between the depressions on the chin in men and women. As a rule, in men, the fossa is deeper and wider, looks like a Y-shaped furrow. In women, the dimple is more rounded and shallower, as the lower jaw in women tends to be smaller than in men.

It is important to assess the risks described below before undergoing a chin pit correction. Injection techniques (HA fillers, botulinum toxin preparations) provide temporary, and surgical procedures – permanent results.
Techniques for injecting HA fillers for chin correction
The easiest way to remove the dimple on the chin – implant hyaluronic acid fillers. They can be injected directly into the dimple to lift the skin in the dimple and thus even out the relief of the chin.
High viscosity fillers are used to achieve a lifting effect and compensate for the lack of volume in the chin area. Such products provide longer lasting results and have the necessary lifting power.
Despite the quick effect and safety of HA fillers, the results of the correction are temporary and last approximately 12 months. To maintain results, the author recommends repeat treatments every 8 months.
The HA filler is injected with a needle directly onto the jawbone in the fossa area. Bolus technique is used for injection. The author recommends that practitioners inject 0.1 ml of the product, counting to ten. In this way, the risk of complications can be reduced, since slow administration and small boluses are generally quite safe. Then, while withdrawing the needle, continuously inject the filler to create a pyramidal bolus.

You can then inject the drug into the lower edge of the jaw at a distance of 1 cm from the medial line of the face to lengthen the face or visually increase the chin. The entry point is located on the lower border of the jaw, just below the corner of the mouth.
If necessary, an additional subdermal injection of the filler can be performed by cannula using a fan technique. In this way the surface is evened out and the end result will be more natural.

Typically, the amount of HA filler needed to correct a chin dimple varies between 1 and 3 ml. Sometimes, if the dimple is too deep or in case of hyperactive mentalis muscle, it is better to carry out the correction in two sessions with an interval of 1 month.

Possibilities of botulinum toxin injections for the correction of depressions on the chin
Botulinum toxin blocks nerve impulses from the brain to the muscles, causing them to relax. The indentation can be reduced by paralyzing the chin muscles (if they are the cause of the dimple) with botulinum toxin.

Surgical procedures for chin dimples
Adipose grafting or surgery is also done to correct a chin dimple. Such procedures provide a longer effect, but require a longer recovery period and are associated with more serious complications, such as:
• infection;
• bleeding;
• scarring;
• puffiness;
• unwanted results.
When grafting fat tissue, it must be remembered that as a result of the procedure, the size of the chin will increase, which may not be to the liking of some patients.
There are two surgical solutions to the problem that can be used either alone or in combination:
• chin implants;
• modification of the bones of the chin and repositioning of the chin muscles.
Whichever therapy the patient chooses, it is important to remember that it is almost impossible to completely remove the dimple on the chin with one technique. The author prefers to perform correction by combining injections of HA filler and botulinum toxin. This technique is less invasive, does not require a long recovery period, and provides immediate results.

Prevention of complications in chin dimple correction
Understanding the anatomy of the treated area is essential to minimize the risk of complications following HA fillers.
Otherwise, the following complications are possible:
• due to intravascular administration of – local skin necrosis;
• massive embolism of the microvasculature; and/or
• external compression of the microvasculature of the chin skin;
• damage to the vessels of the tongue.
If there are signs of vascular damage, hyaluronidase should be injected into the affected area immediately.

To avoid vascular complications, the author suggests:
• use a blunt cannula for injections;
• injects slowly;
• do not apply strong pressure when injecting the filler;
• move the needle when inserting;
• inject small boluses of the drug.
