Today, aesthetic medicine is one of the most progressively developing medical areas. Now people want not only to live long, but also to look young at any age. It is the requests of patients that stimulate the search for new, more effective methods of slowing down aging and correcting age-related changes.

Cosmeceuticals, hardware and injection techniques, as well as many other means and procedures are used today to achieve these goals. Specially for estet-portal.com, a doctor of aesthetic medicine, trainer of Ukrainian Aesthetics, trainer of G&P group, creator of the project "Your Contemporary" spoke about the development of aesthetic medicine, its past, present and future especially for estet-portal.com. Cosmeceuticals – is it something between skin care products and pharmacological preparations?

DK: Cosmeceuticals are closer to pharmacological preparations. There are cosmeceuticals, professional cosmetics, and mass market.

Mass market cannot hurt, but it also cannot help, professional cosmetics can help, but in rare cases it can hurt, but cosmeceuticals can both hurt and help, so it is closer to medicines.

Often in Europe and the USA, cosmeceuticals are distributed to the end consumer through pharmacy chains. That is, drugs are delivered from the factory to pharmacies, and from there – to the patient, but only through a specialist.

What advice should I give to a patient for home use of cosmeceuticals?

DK: Every cosmeceutical has its own side effects, including allergic reactions. In principle, at the initial appointment, the specialist usually uses the cosmeceuticals, which he will then prescribe to the patient for home care. Therefore, when conducting professional care,  he will see if the patient has an allergic reaction to this cosmeceutical. If there is no such reaction – in principle, there is no framework regarding the use of cosmeceuticals for home care. Main – use it only after the appointment of a specialist.

Hardware methods are becoming more popular than injection methods today?

DK: I think that injection techniques are now, so to speak, in a dormant mode. In Latin, there is such a thing as «ultima thule», which means  "point of arrival", "final destination". So it seems to me that today injection techniques have achieved their goal, and have done what they were supposed to do. And so, in order to develop further, injection techniques must take some kind of small pause for scientific research, research on volunteers, scientific work, and so on.

Hardware technologies are just beginning to gain momentum, and it is very good that the research and developments that have been accumulated over the years in injection techniques are now used together with hardware ones. This is a new round in the development of aesthetic medicine. Naturally, injections are also the future, but, in my opinion, these techniques have now taken a pause in order to give a new leap, which we will hear about, I think, very soon.

What maximum development of aesthetic medicine can we expect?

DK: With the development of aesthetic medicine, people have learned to love any age. Previously, this was not the case, our patients were afraid to grow old, but now they are not afraid, and this is a huge merit of aesthetic medicine, and in particular the training congresses that are being held now. There is no end point in aesthetic medicine, because it flows from one state to another. Of course, its main task – as early as possible to begin to prevent this terrible word "aging", that is, wrinkles, excess weight, and so on. But now there are far fewer patients who want to go back from forty to fifteen, many like the way they look with age.

Can we use different methods of aesthetic medicine in our work with a patient?

DK: Of course, depending on the nosology, we can use at least five different methods for the same patient. And, probably, the fact that we can not be limited in our work to one tool, but choose from a whole pool of methods, depending on the needs of the patient – This is also a great merit of the development of medicine. Only an integrated approach in aesthetic medicine can help achieve the results that not only the patient wants to achieve, but, first of all, the doctor, as the patient does not always know exactly what he wants.

Do patients often come to you with a picture of the face they would like to have?

DK: Not often anymore, this trend is over and it's very good. Now there is such a popular word – "hype", that is, the hype around something or someone. Previously, for example, "on the hype" there was actress Angelina Jolie, and everyone wanted to look like her, but now everyone wants to be original, to have some kind of zest.

In recent years, we see different faces, we see patients who do not show that they have undergone any procedures, and this also has the merit of the development of aesthetic medicine.

Returning to the question, what is the ultimate goal of aesthetic medicine, I can say that, probably, its ultimate goal – so that you cannot understand that your girlfriend went to a beautician, and at the same time she would look young, fresh and healthy.
