Aesthetic medicine, and plastic surgery in particular – this is a branch of medicine in which it is very important to constantly learn and get acquainted with new methods, approaches and discoveries of foreign colleagues. Foreign speakers were invited to participate in the Scientific and Practical International Conference "Difficult Cases in Plastic Surgery". As many as four reports were presented by a plastic surgeon from Sweden, a scientist, a postdoctoral student at the Karolinska Institute and a Member of the International Society for Breast Surgery Dmitry Unukovich. In an exclusive interview for readers of estet-portal.com, Dr. Unukovich spoke about the peculiarities of wound care in Sweden, and also shared his impressions of the conference.
At today's conference you are making several reports at once. Tell us why you decided to raise these questions today?
Professor Khrapach has asked me to speak on a number of issues that he considers relevant today. Since the conference is dedicated to difficult cases in plastic reconstructive surgery, my keynote address was dedicated to modern wound management in plastic surgery, both in reconstructive and aesthetic, therefore, my first keynote was about this. I will have three more reports that are devoted to other aspects of plastic surgery, including education, self-education, the importance of attending conferences and internships, and the importance of scientific activity, since it is an integral part of the development of every clinician. In principle, this is one of the standards for the quality training of a doctor, and a plastic surgeon in particular.
What is the difference between wound treatment in our country and abroad?
In Ukraine, the approaches to the treatment of wounds, and, in principle, to any postoperative treatment, the postoperative period are quite conservative. This is due to a certain school of surgery, and, in principle, with certain restrictions in terms of the choice of dressings and postoperative care. In today's lecture, I showed the main types of postoperative dressings and the main types of wounds that we face, and, in principle, suggested options or scenarios for the treatment of wounds of various types and the use of various dressings. The difference lies, first of all, in the information that we have, in the range of choice of materials that is available in Sweden, where I work, and in Ukraine.
I believe that the main component in the treatment is the knowledge of all the tools, the knowledge of those materials that can be used.
In principle, in Ukraine there is now an opportunity to buy any materials, tools, therefore, my mission in this lecture was to show what materials we use. Perhaps Ukrainian colleagues will try these materials, they will like them, which in turn will positively influence the results of our treatment of patients.
How important do you think it is for young professionals to attend such events?
I believe that this is a very important component of the education and career of any specialist, because, the first moment – this is the knowledge that we get from presentations and reports, and the second important point – this is networking. That is, these are contacts, this is new communication, new acquaintances, which, later, can lead to cooperation, to potential employment of a young specialist, to internships, to joint work, including scientific, and any form of interaction with colleagues. The importance lies in the fact that at such events we learn about our colleagues, we can share our clinical cases with them. For example, if someone is more specialized in one of the areas of plastic surgery that you are just starting out in, you can ask the opinion of this person, show your results,
What are your thoughts on this event with our readers?I have known Vasily Vasilyevich for a very long time, and I have participated in all his conferences since 2004. Back then I was a student at the National Medical University, and Professor Khrapach led my surgery group.
Starting from the very first conference, this is such an excellent forum for colleagues from all over Ukraine, including those with invited foreign speakers, where, in principle, all issues are considered without taboos. So we can discuss complications, good results, bad results, ethics issues, education issues, self-training issues, improving our work. I believe that this platform that Vasily Vasilyevich created, and this huge pool of students who work in all cities of Ukraine – this is a great club of plastic surgeons who, due to their friendliness and openness, allow you to discuss absolutely everything. Such a conference, although open, is very comfortable, that is, at it people can feel very relaxed, at ease, ask any questions and receive very qualified answers.
