If you want to lose weight, quit smoking, join a gym, and generally get rid of a bad habit or start a healthier lifestyle, heed the following advice from scientists.

British researchers analyzed data from over 3,700 married or cohabiting couples aged 50 and over.

They were able to find out that men and women who enlist the support of their partner have three times the chance of achieving the desired result.

Many studies confirm that our partners can have a significant impact on our behavior and health.

For example, happy couples who are married or in common-law relationships are less likely to develop heart disease and cancer.

However, scientists do not know if this is because people tend to reflect the good behavior of their life partners, or if they subconsciously choose a partner whose health condition is close to that of the person himself.

The authors of the study, published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine, set out to unravel this mystery.

Scientists from University College London selected men and women living together and having the same bad habits – smoking, overeating or sedentary behavior and tracked their behavior for four years.

Researchers have found that if one partner changed their lifestyle to a healthier one, the second partner most of the time followed suit.

For example, a smoker living with a person who has never smoked has twice the incentive to quit the habit. And for a smoker whose partner decides to quit smoking, this incentive increases ten times, as does the likelihood of success in this difficult task.

Therefore, if you want to change your life for the better, try to involve your soul mate in this positive process.
