A hair dye manufacturer may soon have a serious competitor - a cure for gray hair. A recent report by German scientists reported that hair graying is accompanied by severe oxidative stress on the hair follicles due to the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, with the hair bleaching from the inside out.

A group of German scientists have developed a method to prevent massive accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles. It consists in the topical application of the substance PC-KUS (modified pseudocatalase), which is activated by the action of UV B rays. Moreover, the study showed that the same treatment method is effective against such skin pathology as vitiligo. How PC-KUS works: It is applied topically. Once in the follicles, it converts hydrogen peroxide to harmless water and oxygen, thereby blocking it from accumulating. This allows the hair to retain its natural color.

When examining skin biopsies from patients with vitiligo, researchers found low levels of the enzyme catalase, which breaks down hydrogen. PC-KUS serves as a pseudocatalase, and when the researchers exposed the drug-applied lesion to sunlight, they saw the pigment return to the skin. For many years, various means have appeared to mask gray hair, but now for the first time a real method of treatment has appeared that affects the pathogenesis of this pathology. At the same time, it is impressive that the proposed method of treatment allows not only to restore hair color, but is also effective against vitiligo. Although this condition is a cosmetic defect, it can have a significant socio-emotional impact on people.
