The King of Pop Michael Jackson has undergone more than 50 plastic surgeries, singer Cher — over 60, and English model Alicia Duval — more than 100. In the post-Soviet space, the stars, although later got acquainted with the achievements of plastic surgeons, still did not ignore them.

The rating was headed by Lyudmila Gurchenko, who entrusted her face to surgeons exactly 17 times, believing that only with the help of such a cardinal method she can always look worthy. People's love from this did not become stronger. But the dependence of the star on plasticity aroused sympathy. Why it occurs and how to deal with it
, we decided to figure it out.

Plastic surgery will not stop the aging process

Let's make a reservation right away: we are not talking about those cases when the plastic surgery was initially unsuccessful and the subsequent one is designed to correct all the flaws. This rule does not apply to those who were brought to the surgeon's office by necessity, such as Sergei Zverev, whose face was badly injured during a car accident. Let's omit the fact that the glamorous stylist after that literally got hooked on a scalpel, having done, according to various estimates, about 40 operations. There was nothing wrong with his original desire. Just as one should not blame those who are ready to correct the mistakes of nature and thereby improve their appearance. The story of Norma Jean Mortenson, who appeared to the world under the name of Marilyn Monroe, confirms that a completely ordinary appearance can become a standard thanks to plastic correction.

According to statistics, 40% of plastic clinic patients undergo one single operation in their entire life; 50—60% — two or three, no more. So there is no need to talk about mass dependence. But there is a negligible percentage of those who, dissatisfied with the result, are ready to lie down on the operating table again and again in order to achieve a perfect appearance.

This desire has long gone beyond the boundaries of the artistic circle. So, the American Cindy Jackson, nicknamed "Barbie" for the similarity with the doll, made 52 plastic surgeries. However, there are examples closer: Valeria Lukyanova from Odessa, thanks to surgical operations, has achieved identity with a foreign toy. It is hardly worth asking today whether or not they had to make such sacrifices. But those who are in painful thoughts today should know that it is worth contacting plastic surgeons in strictly defined cases.

Plastic surgery needed

  1. For facial deformity or congenital defects in appearance;
  2. Asymmetries, drooping or underdevelopment of the mammary glands;
  3. Protruding ears;
  4. Postpartum stretch marks of the soft tissues of the abdomen;
  5. Curvature of the legs.

There is one more nuance that makes you take a balanced approach to such a decision. Plastic surgery, like any other, is not without a dose of risk. After rhinoplasty, breathing is sometimes difficult; during abdominoplasty, the shape of the navel changes. Allergic reactions and nerves and vessels affected during surgery — Another reason to think carefully. Not to mention the fact that frequent injections of general combined anesthesia significantly harm the health of internal organs.

And, finally, plastic surgery is unable to stop the natural aging process of the skin. The maximum that a surgeon can do — it is to remove the effects of reduced collagen production or hyaluronic acid synthesis that has accumulated over the last ten years. This allows you to achieve the effect of a second youth. But the biological clock does not change its course, which means that in order to tighten the oval of the face or remove new wrinkles, a new intervention will be needed.

Dysmorphophobia and pathophobia as causes of plastic surgery

Why, then, despite all the warnings, some people go to the operation again and again? Partly — because of the desire to comply with the canons of beauty imposed by advertising. Partly — because of the boundless faith in medical innovation. But even more often — due to dissatisfaction with their appearance, which leads to a constant search for perfection. Suffice it to recall the scandal that erupted around the American TV star Heidi Montag. The 23-year-old diva managed to do ten (!) plastic surgeries in one day. The reason for this behavior, as a rule, lies in the head and has quite specific names.

Dysmorphophobia or imagined deformity syndrome. People suffering from it are never satisfied with their appearance, regardless of the amount of plastic surgery done. An example of this — Michael Jackson, whose commitment to this type of operation was explained by his personal doctor as “a craving for self-mutilation and complete disrespect for oneself.” People with dysmorphophobia are confident in their external deformity, which, in their deep conviction, can only be corrected with the help of plastic surgery. From such operations, they expect amazing effects that will inevitably lead to success in life (successful marriage, good business, etc.). The inability to get what they want makes them turn to a specialist again and again.

By the way, such a phobia develops quite innocently. A person can look in the mirror for hours, refuse to be photographed with friends, as he is sure that the picture will turn out badly and, finally, avoid communication. He really needs a doctor's help. Only not a surgeon, but a psychologist.

Perfectionism — another reason forcing this group of people to turn to plastic surgeons. In their desire to perfect their own appearance, they are ready to go under the scalpel again and again. Alas, the result never meets their expectations, which means that dissatisfaction arises, which each time becomes the reason for another operation.

Pathophobia — fear of illness. It was he who brought Angelina Jolie to the operating room. First, the beauty removed the mammary glands, since, according to medical research, she had a very high risk of getting breast cancer. And most recently, she again shocked the public — this time the diva had her ovaries cut out. The star motivated her decision by hereditary predisposition to the disease, emphasizing that at the age of 56 her mother died of ovarian cancer. Whether Joe was destined to really get sick, no one undertakes to say. But on the other hand, everyone understands that now the beauty needs hormone therapy and is at risk of gynecological diseases. However, she has so far refused to cut out the uterus.

Risk group. It includes those who do not have any psychological abnormalities, but can become addicted to plastic surgery.

Plasty addicts include:
• those who strive for anatomical perfection;
• considers carrying out one operation insufficient;
• and, finally, people with a vulnerable psyche.
