Experts say that protein-rich breakfasts such as bacon, sausages, beans, and eggs increase levels of a chemical (dopamine) in the brain that regulates food intake and hunger.
So people who skip breakfast to lose weight are doing themselves a disservice – they end up eating more throughout the day.
According to lead author of the study, Professor Heather Leidy of the University of Missouri-Columbia, people who eat protein-rich foods for breakfast are less likely to reach for the refrigerator during the day than those who skip it.
Professor Leidy explained: "Overweight people have low dopamine levels, so they want to eat more to feel full, and it's the same story with people who skip breakfast."
The study involved young girls around the age of 19, but scientists say the results are quite relevant to the rest of the people.
Previously, almost all people did not forget to have breakfast, but now, in the pursuit of thinness and attractiveness, the percentage of breakfast eaters has dropped sharply, and the percentage of obese people has increased.
