The hip joint functions to connect the femur bones of the lower extremities with the pelvis, due to which a large load is placed on it. Coxitis or hip arthritis is a pathological process that occurs in the joint of the same name and is characterized by the presence of an inflammatory process in its cavity. In the article we will talk about the causes of the onset and progression of coxitis and how to treat this disease.
Arthritis of the hip joint: signs and treatment
The initial symptom of hip arthritis is pain of varying intensity and frequency. When moving, the pain in the joints can subside and become dull, but pain should not be ignored, because the insidiousness of the disease is hidden by the periodic extinction of pain. Other symptoms depend on the source of the disease.
In this article, we will look at:
- Causes of hip arthritis;
- Types of arthritis of the hip joint and their treatment.
Causes of hip arthritis
Probable causes of hip arthritis:
- complications of infectious diseases (quite rare, but still a possible cause of arthritis of the hip joint);
- overwork of the joint due to excessive loads (especially in the presence of flat feet or coxarthrosis);
- presence of autoimmune rheumatic diseases;
- metabolic disorder (gout, which causes a complication of uric acid crystals in the joints).
The symptoms of coxitis depend on the type of disease. For example, purulent coxitis is accompanied by a sharp rise in body temperature, and with other types of arthritis of the hip joint, symptoms can develop rather slowly. First there are pain sensations, and after them – lameness.
Types of hip arthritis and their treatment
First of all, the treatment of coxitis depends on the type of disease. Nevertheless, there is a single algorithm that doctors adhere to in the treatment of this disease. Thus, the treatment of coxitis should include sanatorium treatment, massage and the use of medicines.
First of all, the joint is provided with a fixed state, which can be done through the use of various dressings. The patient is prescribed the use of special drugs almost simultaneously, after which surgical methods are included in the treatment. After the treatment is over, the patient attends various physiotherapy and exercise therapy classes.
Reactive arthritis of the hip joint. This type of coxitis develops due to past infections. Symptoms in this case develop quite quickly, not only joints are affected, but also tendons, mucous membranes, skin and nails. In addition, the lymph nodes increase, the kidneys become inflamed, the heart rhythm is disturbed.
The main goal in the treatment of reactive arthritis of the hip joint is the destruction of the infection-causative agent, so the patient undergoes a course of antibiotics. Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs are also taken.
Tuberculosis coxitis. Children often suffer from this type of disease. There is a secondary lesion of the joint after the organ that has suffered from the causative agent of tuberculosis. In this case, the symptoms appear rather slowly and are mainly lameness and pain. Chemotherapy is used to treat tuberculous coxitis.
Transient coxite. To this day, the exact causes of this type of inflammation are unknown. Presumably this type of coxite – a consequence of trauma or an inflammatory disease. Transistor coxitis is typical for children of preschool and primary school age. The main symptoms are acute pain in the groin area, pain in the joint when moving, and lameness. Treatment in this case is necessarily carried out in a hospital.
In some cases, surgical treatment may be required, which is aimed at sanitizing the focus of infection and restoring joint functions that have been lost. After the acute period of the disease is left behind, massage and exercise therapy are applied.
