For many years, experts have tried to convey to the people of the United States the message that tanning beds can increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Finally, the Americans realized that excessive passion for such a tan is very dangerous, and heeded the advice of doctors.

At the beginning of the past decade, oncologists and dermatologists in America, and then doctors in other countries, launched an indefinite campaign, the main goal of which was to combat tanning beds. Basically, the attention of experts was focused on the problem of excessive passion for year-round tanning among the younger generation.

It is known that exposure to both natural sun rays and artificial ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of developing various forms of skin cancer, primarily melanoma.

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays is responsible for 86% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 90% of melanoma cases. In the United States, for example, the number of people who die each year from all forms of skin cancer reaches an average of 13,000, of which 9,700 Americans die due to melanoma.

Despite such disappointing figures, the efforts of American doctors were not in vain. Thanks to the regular reminders of experts about the dangers of regular tanning (mainly in solariums), the number of tanning parlors has noticeably decreased in the country.

Scientists conducted a study during which they conducted surveys for 5 years among a group of high school students and students on the topic of how often they visit solariums. The total number of respondents was 15,000 people. According to the results of surveys, the attendance of tanning salons has fallen, while in 2009 25.4% of respondents were their regular customers, and in 2013 – they were 20.2%.
