A revolutionary device reduces high blood pressure in patients better than drugs. This conclusion was made by researchers from London's Queen Mary University. The "Coupler" device, developed by ROX Medical, is a paperclip-sized implant that is placed between an artery and a vein in the upper thigh. The procedure lasts 40 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

Scientists conducted a randomized, masked trial in people with high blood pressure who were not helped by medication.

Specialists call this device a completely new and promising way to treat hypertension. Existing drugs target hormonal or neurological regulation of blood pressure, while new treatments such as renal denervation focus entirely on the renal nervous system.

The Coupler effectively handles the mechanical aspects of blood circulation, making it a revolutionary way to control blood pressure for immediate results – pressure reduction immediately after installation of the device.

However, the new device also has a side effect – 29 out of 44 patients who received the implant had a swollen leg, so doctors had to stent the vein.

At this stage, scientists say that it is too early to use such a device on a mass scale. First you need to investigate the long-term effect of the device, get more information about its safety.
