CitiDoctor clinic hosted a master class on augmentation mammoplasty and reconstructive breast surgery. The event brought together surgeons from all over the world to understand together all the technical features of working in this area.

The oncoplastic surgeon from Sweden Dmitry Unukovich told estet-portal.com readers about how the master class went, where surgeons usually get their knowledge and inspiration from, and the importance of reconstructive breast surgery for patients with breast cancer MD , PhD .

What do you think of today's workshop?

D.W.: We are acquainted with Vasily Khrapach (ed. - President of the Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons of Ukraine) and Alexey Filchukov (ed.– national manager of the Alergan company) - for more than 10 years. And I know that any business they undertake is doomed to success.

Besides, I always try to attend such events, so I am very glad to attend this master class, especially since it is presented by my colleague from Stockholm. I am very pleased that such close ties are being formed between Ukraine and Sweden. We continue to exchange experiences, try to engage in scientific activities together, write articles.

Today's workshop – this is an example of a modern approach to learning.

Due to the availability of the webinar, doctors who were unable to attend can also be a part of this event.

Where do you get your knowledge from and where do you get your inspiration from?

DW: I get my knowledge primarily from talking to colleagues because we all operate and work with patients in our own way. When we communicate with each other, participate in conferences, receive new information, we rethink our own work experience.

Literature – this is also very important, but live communication – this is an opportunity to learn the details. Because plastic surgery – these are the smallest nuances that cannot be found in the literature, or measured with a ruler. As for inspiration, as a person who works with aesthetics, I get my energy from traveling, visiting new places, and meeting new people.

How important is breast reconstruction psychologically for women?

DW: First of all, you need to start with the fact that approaches to treatment of breast cancer have changed a lot, and this allows you to operate and treat patients much better. Today, in most cases, we perform breast-sparing operations by performing partial mastectomy. In cases where the breast is removed completely – we can offer a one-time reconstruction. As for contraindications, they are minimized. Currently, even large tumors can be removed with one-stage reconstruction.

Breast Reconstruction – this is very important  component of modern surgical treatment of breast cancer, which affects how the patient perceives her body, and how much she feels feminine.

I do research in this area and we have found that immediate breast reconstruction is the most optimal intervention, as the patient falls asleep under anesthesia and wakes up without feeling that this operation has somehow traumatized her.

There are benefits and improved quality of life even if the reconstruction is delayed when the breast has already been removed – There are several different ways to restore it. And a well-executed operation using  quality implants, for example, such as Natrelle®, gives a huge increase in the quality of life. It also helps the patient to change the perception of her body, and love it again.
