The skin reflects the state of the whole human body. Its appearance is influenced by nutrition, and the presence of healthy sleep, and the balance of nutrients and trace elements. Substances with antioxidant activity, such as vitamin C, especially contribute to maintaining youthful skin.
The President of Universkin, PhD Harry Arampatzis spoke about the effect of ascorbic acid on the skin condition, as well as effective methods of preparing the skin for surgical interventions for estet-portal.com.
Which Universkin skin care products fight inflammation, the main cause of aging
We know that the skin has the ability to self-repair, but, unfortunately, with age, the activity of self-regeneration processes decreases.
According to our research, keratinocytes, the cells that are responsible for the barrier and protective function of the skin, are able to synthesize anti-inflammatory components.
When we discovered that cells produce anti-inflammatory substances, we began to work on what is called biomimetics. It is based on a complete imitation of the natural processes occurring in the skin cell.
The main task of biomimetics is to help keratinocytes synthesize anti-inflammatory components, namely EPA and DHA, which are two forms of Omega-3, known for their powerful anti-inflammatory properties. We do not bring anything from the outside, we teach our skin to be young again.
What are the features of the use of vitamin C in skin care products from Universkin
Vitamin C — one of the most important elements that is necessary for nourishing the skin. Unfortunately, this micronutrient has a very low oral bioavailability. This means that we will be forced to consume a huge amount of vitamin C before a small fraction of ascorbic acid enters our skin cells. In addition, our body does not synthesize vitamin C, and this is a big problem.
Therefore, we can only provide the skin with ascorbic acid locally using creams or other topical agents.
Regarding the dosage of vitamin C, there have been numerous clinical studies that show that ascorbic acid has a minimal effect at a concentration of 5-7%.
It is very important what maximum load of vitamin C our skin can withstand. People with skin phototypes I and II, those with thin and fair skin, as well as patients with light hair color and blue eyes, are more difficult to tolerate the effects of vitamin C.
For them, its use may be fraught with allergic reactions, so such patients should be given low doses of ascorbic acid – at a concentration of 5-7%. We prescribe higher concentrations to patients with fairly dense skin, since vitamin C in free form is nothing but an acid.
In such cases, when working with Universkin products, which are presented by ANK company, you can use 2 capsules of vitamin C – namely 40% concentration. Sometimes, when a person has very thick skin, or melasma therapy is necessary, we use a 60% concentration of ascorbic acid.
Thus, vitamin C is an important ingredient that every person needs. But the question is whether a person tolerates high doses of vitamin C, and what is the optimal dose needed for the skin of a particular patient. Also, the appointment of ascorbic acid depends on the season. In summer, higher doses of vitamin C should be used, as the sun's rays speed up its breakdown.
So UV – damage in dermatological publications was once defined as "dermatological scurvy", which, in fact, indicated a lack of vitamin C.
What is the best way to prepare the skin for surgery
The formula for preparing for plastic surgery, such as a facelift or rhinoplasty, will depend on the patient's skin phototype. Therefore, before performing rhinoplasty, we use a formula that will ensure the preservation of the biological barrier of the skin.
It is very important to eliminate blackheads in the nose area before this operation. To do this, we use preparations based on salicylic acid. We also use lactopeptides – to restore flora, niacinamide and azelaic acid to combat hyperpigmentation. We need to prepare the skin for healing, so we can use Madecassoside, also known as Centella asiatica (Centella asiatica — herbaceous flowering plant. – Ed.), which will speed up wound healing.
Thus, our main goals during preparation for surgery are to improve the quality of the skin, prepare it for healing, and also prevent the occurrence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What is your own definition of beauty?
Beauty — it is how we feel, our inner state. It's more than a neat nose or beautiful lips.
What makes you happy in your job?
Greek philosophers used to say: “Do what you love — and then you won't have to work a day in your life. I don't feel like I'm actually working, my work is my passion. The entire Universkin team, all scientists and doctors are passionate about what we do. Working with patients, improving the skin, and most importantly - understanding it, we create the best treatment for everyone. Therefore, passion is work, and work is passion, and we cannot do otherwise.
Recall that Universkin in Ukraine is represented by the company "Academy of Scientific Beauty".
