It has long been known that breast milk can protect the baby from the development of various allergies. Recently, it became known that thanks to breast milk it is possible to cure such an allergic disease as eczema.

The immune system of infants is able to develop normally thanks to their consumption of mother's milk. This is the reason why allergic diseases are much less common among breastfed babies.

Scientists from Iran have found that breast milk can be used to treat eczema in young children and results are equivalent to those obtained by using steroid ointments. However, the latter are contraindicated for use in the treatment of babies under 2 years of age, and their long-term use is also contraindicated, due to the presence of synthetic hormones in their composition that can provoke suppression of adrenal function.

For their study, staff from the Medical University in the Iranian city of Arak divided the children into two groups, each with 15 babies. The children in the first group were prescribed topical treatment with hydrocortisone ointment 1% for external use, for the treatment of other children, breast milk was used, lubricating it with skin areas that were affected by eczema.

Checking the skin of all children was carried out by scientists on the 7th, 14th and 21st day of treatment. The researchers found that the effect after the application of breast milk was equivalent to that of the use of hydrocortisone ointment.

At the same time, the advantage of the alternative method of treatment was that it excluded the occurrence of side effects.

A new phase of the study will soon take place, which will involve several hundred babies diagnosed with atopic dermatitis.
