At the end of March 2017, a very significant event was held in Kyiv for the development of aesthetic medicine in Ukraine. For the first time in the country, a unique new generation botulinum toxin Xeomin was presented. A large number of aesthetic medicine specialists from different parts of the country attended the presentation to get acquainted with the new drug. Especially for the readers of estet-portal.com, a dermatovenereologist of the highest category, a member of the European Association of Dermatologists, an honorary member of the Association of Injectionists, Irina Sergeevna Kapshuchenko shared her personal experience of performing Xeomin injections.
Irina Sergeevna, what do you think the appearance of Xeomin means for the development of aesthetic medicine in Ukraine?
I think that this is a big breakthrough in aesthetic cosmetology in Ukraine, as a drug is being introduced to the market, which is the purest botulinum toxin.
During our work, we have accumulated a lot of patients who are waiting for injections of Xeomin, for the reason that they have immunoresistance to the well-known botulinum toxins.
We have very young patients whose health we care about. Now we will inject them with botulinum toxin, and not worry about them developing resistance. I think this is a great benefit for both our patients and my colleagues.
We know that you have been trained in Xeomin in Germany. Tell us about this experience?
It was a very interesting and exciting trip to Germany to the "Merz" plant. We looked at how the product itself is made, and we were lectured by excellent speakers, immunologists, who directly came up with the Xeomin formula. It was a very great experience for me, which, one might say, turned my views on the introduction of botulinum toxin, because the German speakers told how to love the patient, and how we should take care not only of the temporary effect and the aesthetic effect, but also of the patient's health. We have to think what will happen to our patient in 10, 15 or 25 years.
Have you had any experience with Xeomin injections? Does this procedure have any peculiarities?
Yes, of course, I have experience doing Xeomin injections. The procedure does not have big differences in injections, but there are differences in doses. We have to adjust them, in comparison with other botulinum toxins, booster injections also matter. We can inject botulinum toxin at any time and it works very quickly. If we do not fully get the result that the patient expected, we can not wait 2-3 weeks, and perform Xeomin injections.
For which age category of patients are Xeomin injections best suited?
This is a very important and interesting question, because we can use Xeomin in very young patients, and take care that we will not cause any harm to their health.
We will not cause immunoresistance, we will not affect the patient's immunity in any way, since Xeomin is purified from clostridial protein, and therefore it is the drug of choice for young patients.
In addition, Xeomin injections are optimal for patients who have become insensitive to previously used botulinum toxins and no longer have an effect. These patients are really looking forward to this drug, because they are used to looking good and beautiful.
