The meeting “History and technologies of the cosmetic house Academie” was held, which brought together cosmetologists from all over Ukraine. The event was opened by Mr. Christoph Therm himself – head of the founding family of the Academie Scientifique de Beaute.

At the meeting, Mr. Therme told the guests the story of the brand Academie Scientifique de Beaute, which turns 129 this year! Many were pleasantly shocked to learn that it was Academie that was the first to use collagen and jojoba oil in cosmetics, and that ordinary water was replaced with natural – apple. It was in Academie that they created the first and best self-tanner in the world, which even now is sold at a rate of one product per minute. The brand has many more such innovations, but the most interesting thing is that, despite the stunning development dynamics, Academie Scientifique de Beaute still remains a family business.

How did the cosmetic brand Academie begin its development

C.T.: Academie was founded in 1890 by Dr. Alexander Lamotte. We were the first beauty salon located in the most elegant district of Paris at the turn of the century – at 376 Rue Saint-Honoré. In 1926, Alexandre Lamotte gave the business to his student, the young pharmacist Georges Gay.

In 1953, Georges transferred ownership of the company to his son – Gerard and his wife. Now my wife and I run the company. We will be followed by the fourth generation.

Our company – this is the creation of whole generations.

At every stage of development, we have created new products, innovations and have always been pioneers in the world of beauty.

How did the popular self-tanner come about

C.T.:  It was discovered by Gerard. A couple of months before this discovery, a toner came out that was popular, but had a bad smell and an ugly shade on the skin. Gerard decided to do it his own way: it was he who came up with the world's first self-tanner, with which you could achieve a natural tan.

Its formula hasn't changed since 1960: good smell, high performance, fantastic shade immediately after application, color fastness even after water treatment. Thanks to the combination of doxyacetone (DOA), which is a safe and effective substance, the skin has a pleasant and natural tan appearance. We are very proud of this product because the – it is a worldwide french brand.

C.T.: I would say yes and no. No – because our values ​​do not change, we are always transparent, we are on the side of innovation and remain pioneers in the world of the cosmetology industry. But now we have decided to implement a new strategy and be more scientific in beauty, we are leaning towards an eco-friendly concept, as well as more transparency.

We share the same values, but we try to get better every year. 

What innovations have Academie created recently

C.T.: DERM ACTE lab developed a unique hyaluronic acid encapsulation process that was presented at the conference «Academy of Scientific Beauty» which allows you to deliver it to the deep layers of the skin and realize all the necessary effects. In this way, water is retained inside the cells, wrinkles are smoothed out, and the skin becomes deeply hydrated and supple.

We have created capsules containing high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, peptides, retinol and other active substances.

Our French brand sees the future in discoveries like this.

We are also working on skin cleansers. Our environment is full of pollution: emissions from factories, exhaust from cars, dust, heavy metals, etc. With cleansers that create a protective layer on the skin, you can protect your skin from unwanted impurities.

How does Academie plan to develop in the near future

C.T.: We have decided to split our French brand: in the future Academie will have 3 sectors: Académie Scientifique de Beauté, Derm Acte and Bronze-Express.

The first section includes face, body, aromatherapy, sun protection and men.

Derm Acte will target physicians, injectors, while Bronze-Express will contain the entire self tanning line.

Therefore we will have three brands and therefore different websites, orders and business cards.

For many, such a strategy will seem unusual, but all this is created to avoid competition within the brand and "eating" themselves. Now we will have separate products for highly qualified cosmetologists, doctors and specialists who work in salons.
