Rosacea – this is a very common problem, which is sometimes not given enough serious attention by both patients and doctors. In this regard, a huge number of misconceptions arise around this disease.

About which of the popular statements are myths, and where to look for reliable information regarding rosacea treatment especially for estet-portal.com, the professor, doctor of medical sciences, vice-president of the Ukrainian Association of Dermatovenereologists and cosmetologists, expert of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the specialties "dermatovenereology", "children's dermatovenereology", member of the European Academy of Dermatology, chief physician and founder of the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetology Professor Svyatenko – Tatiana Svyatenko.

What are the current misconceptions about the treatment of rosacea

TS: Rosacea is a problem that has been engrained in a lot of misconceptions, myths and pseudoscientific information. The first delusion – this is that rosacea is not treated, and the second cardinal opposite is that rosacea does not need to be treated.  Many patients ignore quality of life and believe that rosacea is not a serious medical problem.

Popular myths about rosacea also include the exaggeration of the role of the mite Demodex folliculorum in the development of the disease.

Another misconception is the age of the patients. Many people think that this disease mainly affects the older age group, however, now we are increasingly working with patients under 20 years of age.

What are the current trends in the treatment of rosacea

TS: There is a 2017 consensus on the treatment of rosacea that was jointly compiled by dermatologists and ophthalmologists. It clearly indicates what the doctor should do for each form of rosacea. It outlines the algorithm for external treatment of this disease, depending on the morphological manifestations, phase, stage and severity of the disease.

Topical treatments for rosacea most commonly include metronidazole, azelaic acid, brimonidine.

In addition, this protocol includes alternative therapies, such as IPL therapy, electrocoagulation, and laser treatment for treating telangiectasias.

Great importance is given to the prevention of the disease – namely, minimizing the impact of trigger factors.

What are the most absurd cases of rosacea you have seen in your practice

TS: The most absurd cases, unfortunately, are most often associated not with patients, but with doctors. The reason for this is most often another common myth regarding rosacea, that hormonal drugs should be prescribed for this disease. This should not be done categorically, as it leads to a vicious circle.

The skin is constantly "waiting" for drugs, and when the treatment is canceled, we get an exacerbation and withdrawal syndrome, which significantly worsen the course of the disease. This is absurd, because today the data of evidence-based medicine are available to any specialist.
