Plastic surgery today has reached such a level that allows specialists to literally sculpt the desired contour of the face and body. And if the legendary Pygmalion had the capabilities that modern science gives to aesthetic medicine, then his Galatea would turn into a masterpiece with ideal shapes and proportions. After all, art now inspires the plastic surgeon and his client to search for the perfect image, and scientific discoveries make this dream come true.
Not so long ago, a plastic surgeon, after listening to the patient's wishes regarding the correction of appearance, tried to reproduce the desired image with a pencil on paper. Then they began to use photographs, which greatly facilitated the possibility of predicting the results of the operation. And with the advent of special computer programs that made it possible to visually invent, compare and correct the features of the future appearance on the eve of the operation, not only in a flat, but also in a volumetric form, and even with realistic predictions for the results, it began to seem that - finally , created the perfect tool for the work of a plastic surgeon.
However, as you know, there is no limit to perfection - not only in art, but also in the technologies of aesthetic medicine. Recently, 3D modeling using virtual models has become available to professionals in the field of plastic surgery. And we asked to tell more about the possibilities of the method of the creator of this unique technology.

VIPS – Virtual Plastic Surgery is a new direction in plastic surgery, born on the verge of art and 3D technologies. It is based on innovative 3D modeling technologies.
The details of these technologies were first presented to the world community at the 21st Congress of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS-2012) in Switzerland, and a little later at the 15th Congress of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS-2012) surgeons (International Society of Craniofacial Surgery – ISCFS-2013) in the USA and at the 22nd Congress of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS-2014) in Brazil.
Today in Moscow offers its services "VIP studio" - the world's first scientific and medical laboratory, specialized in the use of three-dimensional technologies in plastic surgery.
VIPS technology is based on the creation of a virtual three-dimensional patient model based on safe light scanning and computed tomography data. This approach is a revolutionary step in plastic surgery. It allows you to better plan operations and analyze the results. New opportunities have become available that were previously unfeasible, for example: the participation of the patient in 3D planning of their appearance, the manufacture of individual implants to order, high precision in the execution of operations, fitting their appearance to the selected image, etc.
The difference between 3D models and regular photography. For modeling, surgeons usually use two-dimensional photographs and process the images using Photoshop. This is clearly not enough, since a person is not flat, but three-dimensional, therefore, for an adequate assessment of his external data, three-dimensional images are needed.
VIPS 3D models differ from commercial 3D modeling
Typically, commercial 3D models are built from photographs and are designed to give the illusion of volume, but do not care to match the original in size. They can't even be measured. VIPS 3D models are identical to the original to the smallest detail because they are shot with high-precision scanners. They even contain a skeleton and can be measured, modified and subjected to virtual operations. This is a quantum leap in plastic surgery.
At the request of the patient, plastic surgery can be performed on a three-dimensional virtual model. This allows the patient to choose the desired image even before the operation and plan the change in appearance with the help of specialists - medical engineers, doctors and artists.
Advanced capabilities of the VIPS technique.
What does the VIPS technique allow?
- Analyze your appearance on a 3D model and identify problems.
- Create a new desired image - change the face, chest, waist, buttocks, etc.
- Make necessary measurements and calculations that conventional image editors cannot allow.
- Create a beautiful virtual breast within 30 minutes and choose an implant for it.
- Calculate the shape and volume of asymmetric breast implants.
- Tell you exactly your current and future breast size.
- Precisely calculate the required standard face implant or fabricate a custom one.
- Find out how much fat to remove or add to get the desired body proportions.
- Achieve the highest match between predicted and achieved results.
- Why do patients often turn to VIPS for revision rhinoplasties, facial and breast implant replacements?
The most common reasons for patients to come in for remodeling:
- Incorrect selection of the shape and size of the nose and chin.
- Facial implant displacement.
- Lack of facial harmony.
- Ugly breasts.
In most cases, this is due to the lack of a systematic approach by surgeons and patients when planning plastic surgeries. Surgical skills alone are not enough. Accurate planning methods are needed.
So, when perceiving a face, all its elements are important. The nose and chin are key structures of the face. When correcting their form, it is very important that they match.
When breast augmentation is important, not only its size, but also the shape, location on the chest, its borders, smooth transitions to neighboring areas.
Analyzing, selecting and predicting physical appearance using flat photographs or commercial 3D simulations alone leads to inaccuracies and errors. If the methods are not accurate, it is impossible to make correct predictions based on them, to generalize experience. It is known that the deeper the study, the more accurate the prediction.
