The aesthetic canons of appearance change in society depending on the era and geography, the level of cultural development and the quality of life. The economic component also plays a significant role in these changes, since aesthetic medicine requires significant investments, and once a lot of money is invested in certain images, they are often imposed on society as an ideal. Plastic surgery for many patients looks like a seductively easy solution that will help to quickly and easily solve social and psychological problems. But is it really so?
One of the best Belarusian plastic surgeons, Candidate of Medical Sciences Oleg Stasevich spoke about his work in general and the role of aesthetic medicine in the modern world in particular.
Oleg Valerievich Stasevich,
plastic surgeons, PhD
Plastic surgeries have been known to people since ancient times. in ancient China they practiced "bandaging" of the feet, the Maya deformed the skull – and it was considered beautiful. Under what circumstances, in your opinion, beauty can turn into ugliness in decades?
– In this case, we are talking about the understanding of the definition of "aesthetics of appearance" by a particular society. It changes depending on the time, place, conditions and quality of life, that is, on the external factors in which people function.
In our time, the mass understanding of aesthetics is strongly influenced by business. Any. Information technology, light and food industry, military-industrial complex, etc. In today's world, everything is interconnected. If you set a goal and do not spare material resources, then almost any image can be imposed on society, a variety of concepts about the aesthetics of appearance.
How important is being a psychologist in your profession?
– Any doctor should be a psychologist. This is his duty as much as helping a person who is bleeding. Of course, if I have doubts about the appropriateness of the operation or I see that the patient's expectations are unrealistic, I try to clearly explain my position. It is important to give a person the opportunity to rethink himself.
It is possible to dissuade from an unwanted operation, but the task of the surgeon during the consultation – full information. And the patient already makes his own decision. If you put everyone who comes in on the operating table, it will only end in a lot of problems. For the naked thirst for profit does not lead to anything good.
Is it possible to change the appearance of a person beyond recognition with the help of plastic surgery?
– Real, but illegal. After such an operation, the patient needs to change the photo in the passport. To return to the previous thought: if you put everyone who comes in on the operating table ...
Today, a plastic surgeon can change any part of the body.
The only question is how natural and aesthetic it will look.
Can plastic surgery be prescribed for medical reasons or is it done purely at the request of a person?
– Operations are carried out, including for medical reasons. For example, breast reduction or tummy tuck, nose correction after injuries. There is a whole section of plastic surgery – microsurgery. Specialists in this field restore damaged vessels, nerves, limbs. They have a lot of work.
Plastic surgery is divided into two more areas – reconstructive and aesthetic. The second is much more outrageous and attention-grabbing, so they talk mostly about it. Commercial overtones also play a big role here, because this segment is attractive for the medical business.
So aesthetics itself cannot be a medical indication?
– Modern ideas about people's health suggest such a characteristic as "quality of life". For example, if a person experiences mental discomfort, can he be called completely healthy? After all, from the point of view of psychology, he suffers. So if we abstract from the conventions, then aesthetic medicine is also performed for medical reasons. The nuances of one's own appearance cause discomfort in a person, and after the operation, the quality of his life changes for the better. For example, he forgets about complexes and can work on television, and he is simply not afraid to appear in public.
How popular are plastic surgeon services today among the representatives of the strong half of humanity?
– The ratio of patients to patients in my practice is approximately 10:1. The most popular – various types of anti-aging interventions on the face (blepharoplasty, lipofilling, various types of tissue tightening, etc.). If we look at the data of the Society for Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery last year, it turns out that the share of breast augmentation in Belarus is 10% versus 25% of anti-aging procedures.
Can we say that today plastic surgery is becoming not just a fashionable hobby, but also entertainment and even addiction?
– Plastic surgery – this is, of course, a great temptation. The procedure looks much more attractive than dieting or, say, playing sports. After all, plastic surgery allows you to quickly solve many problems.
Hence the appearance of the type of people doing surgery for the sake of surgery. But I wouldn't call it entertainment. Any abuse of – fraught, whether it's plastic, ice cream or rhinestones on clothes.
