One of the most popular areas of plastic surgery for many years has been breast correction. The aesthetic perception of this part of the female body may depend on fashion, and on the ideas accepted in society about the beauty of forms, and on the self-esteem of a woman.

Dmitry Anatolyevich Decyk answered some questions from estet-portal.com about the methods of correcting the shape and size of the breast, about the specifics of breast plastic surgery.

What problems do patients most often come to you with?

As a rule, patients come to the plastic surgeon with complaints of dissatisfaction with the volume and shape of the mammary glands. Most often, women who breastfeed their children turn to, after which it lost its former attractiveness, but the patient has a great desire to recreate the previous volume and shape of the breast. Just as often, young girls are treated, whom nature has not endowed with "big forms", and they would like to change this part of the body.

Does it happen that breast plastic surgery is necessary for medical reasons?

Breast correction for medical reasons is also performed. We are approached by patients who have undergone surgery for partial or complete removal of the mammary glands, and they need plastic surgery to restore the lost shape and volume of the breast.

Modern methods of breast correction

What modern methods of breast correction are most often used in Ukraine and in other countries?

Currently, there are many ways to correct the mammary glands. If we divide the methods into groups, then we can distinguish the following categories.

Firstly, these are plastics that are carried out with their own tissues. These include various breast lift techniques (mastopexy), and lipofilling is also widely used to correct the volume and shape of the breast. The same group includes methods of breast plastic surgery with various displaced flaps.

The next type of plastic – These are techniques that use synthetic materials. The most commonly used technique is the placement of breast implants. This type of breast plastic surgery is the most common technique. More than a million of these surgeries are performed worldwide every year.

Augmentation plastic (enlarging) allows you to get a stable, fairly predictable effect of the operation. This group also includes methods of breast reconstruction after oncological operations. For this purpose, tissue expanders are installed to form a pocket in the tissues of the chest wall, followed by the installation of implants for breast reconstruction.

Recently, methods of breast lift with the help of special threads installed in the mammary gland tissue have appeared and become popularized. With the help of these techniques, the ptotic mammary glands are lifted. This technique has its limitations: small ptosis can be corrected with it, and the effect of the lift is not as long-lasting as after traditional surgical methods.

Another type of breast correction is a combination of the previous methods – when one of the types of breast lift is performed in combination with the installation of implants.

Another group of breast correction methods – This is a breast reduction (reduction). This technique involves reducing the volume of the mammary glands by surgical removal of excess gland tissue. This group includes the performance of liposuction of the mammary glands.

All these plastic techniques are successfully used both all over the world and in Ukraine.

Can implants or fillers cause tumor development

What are the criteria for a surgeon to prefer one or another type of implant?

There are many different types of breast implants available today. They differ in manufacturer, have different shapes and sizes. Many brand-name implant manufacturers are represented and registered in Ukraine. We use different types of implants in our practice. Sometimes the choice of brand is carried out taking into account the wishes of patients. But most often, many surgeons use two or three brands, taking into account sizes and manufacturers. The type and size of implants are selected individually for each patient, taking into account anthropometric data, the desired shape and size of the breast.

All implants registered in Ukraine are absolutely safe. Modern technologies for the production of implants will make it possible to create completely inert materials that are devoid of antigenic properties and do not have any effect on the human body. Numerous world scientific studies have proven the absence of the effect of breast implants on the development of breast tumors. Manufacturers give a lifetime warranty on implants. Therefore, breast augmentation with the help of modern implants is a fairly safe operation both in the early and in the long term.

Is breast correction possible for women who are planning pregnancy and breastfeeding?

It must be said right away that planned pregnancy and breastfeeding are not a contraindication for breast augmentation using implants. In this case, there is only a feature of their installation – it is undesirable to install implants through the periareolar approach, as in this case there is a risk of damaging the ducts of the gland, and some problems may arise during breastfeeding.

Are there complications after breast augmentation and how can they be prevented?

First of all, it is necessary to carry out the necessary preoperative examination in order to determine the patient's health status, as well as significantly reduce the risks of possible postoperative complications. Based on the examination, the possibility of the operation is determined.

It must be clearly understood that breast correction – It is a surgical operation like any other. Therefore, as with any operation, you need to prepare for breast correction.

If we consider the issues of the likely development of complications, then they can be divided into early and late.

Early complications include bleeding, hematoma formation, wound inflammation, seroma formation, postoperative wound dehiscence. These are almost all the complications that are possible with any surgical operation.

Late complications include the formation of an unaesthetic scar (hypertrophic, keloid scar), the formation of capsular contracture, implant displacement, and deformity of the breast contour.

The risk of these complications is minimized with a well-conducted examination before surgery and sufficient qualifications of the plastic surgeon.

What is important to warn the patient before breast surgery

Of course, the patient must be warned that this is a surgical intervention that may be fraught with possible complications, despite a very small percentage of their development. Because in some cases, breast plastic surgery is treated like a trip to a beautician. And, unfortunately, even the most experienced surgeon cannot 100% guarantee that these problems will not occur, despite the implementation of all necessary measures to prevent complications.

Which body contouring procedures can breast augmentation be combined with?

Breast plastic surgery can in principle be performed in combination with any kind of body correction. But most often we combine breast augmentation with liposuction of any area of the body or with abdominoplasty. In fact, these combinations can be different and depend on the desire of the patient, as well as on the need and extent of the combined operation.

How is the postoperative period going, and what recommendations should patients follow after breast augmentation?

In the normal postoperative period, the sutures are removed on the 7-9th day. In the postoperative period, we prescribe special gels on the chest to quickly reduce postoperative edema and accelerate recovery processes. We also recommend applying special gels to the scar, which contribute to its normal formation. An important role in the postoperative period is played by the correct selection and wearing of special compression underwear, which allows you to fix the implant in the breast and gives the breast the correct position. Such underwear can be worn up to 2 months.

And what is important – this is the observation of a surgeon in the long term to identify the possible formation of capsular contracture, since in the early stages this problem can be treated conservatively.
