The fact that botulinum toxin preparations are often used by cosmetologists in anti-aging programs, – many know. The ability of this neurotoxin to have a relaxing effect on facial muscles has long been successfully used to fight wrinkles on the face. But when a doctor suggests using the same botulinum toxins to solve, for example, the problem of excessive sweating, patients are often surprised. Nevertheless, every year the scope of botulinum toxin preparations in aesthetic medicine is expanding, allowing patients not only to become younger and more attractive, but also to improve the quality of life.

Hyperhidrosis treatment

Sweating – an important part of the thermoregulation system that protects our body from overheating. Sweat, evaporating from the surface of the skin, passes from a liquid to a gaseous state and absorbs energy. Thanks to this, the skin, and in place with it our body, cools down.

Hyperhidrosis is a disorder of the sweating system, in which a person sweats a lot, which causes a lot of inconvenience.

Most often, hyperhidrosis is local in nature, affecting only the palms or feet, armpits or head, but it happens that hyperhidrosis spreads to all of the listed areas – generalized hyperhidrosis.

There are various treatments for hyperhidrosis, but over the past decade, the introduction of botulinum toxin has become the most popular and effective treatment for hyperhidrosis.

The neurotoxin blocks the transmission of impulses not only to the muscles, but also to the sweat glands, i.e. reduces sweating. Botulinum toxin preparations are successfully used to treat excessive sweating on the palms, in the armpits, and on the feet. The dose is selected by preliminary testing.

The procedure is easy, safe and takes little time. The effect comes in a few days and lasts 9-12 months. Moreover, against the background of constant treatment (1 or 2 times a year), the manifestations of hyperhidrosis decrease over time. There are observations that when botulinum toxin is injected into only one palm or foot, the secretion stops on both.

Anti-wrinkle botulinum toxins

Neurotoxin type A blocks the transmission of a motor impulse from a nerve to a muscle fiber. After the injection of the drug, the muscle relaxes and at the same time the skin relief over it straightens. It is impossible to remove wrinkles that result from muscle movement in any other way than injections of botulinum toxin. The muscle retains its functions and goes into a state of rest.

On average, the maximum therapeutic effect appears on the 14th-15th day. There are observations of how very fast acting Botox or Dysport – already for 2–3 days, and delayed for 3–4 weeks.

The mobility of the muscles on the face is partially restored after 3-4 months, full recovery is observed after 4-6 months. After repeated injections, the duration of the effect reaches 6-12 months. To achieve a stable and long-term effect, it is recommended to administer Botox or Dysport 2-3 times a year. The skin on the face is directly connected to the underlying muscles. Therefore, facial expressions form wrinkles on the forehead, bridge of the nose, around the eyes. An additional mechanism for the formation of wrinkles is the genetically programmed and enhanced by external factors, the process of skin aging. Already in young people with a hereditary predisposition and increased facial expressions, deep mimic wrinkles appear.

If the facial muscles are blocked for a long time, the skin above them restores elasticity, wrinkles are smoothed out. An excellent effect is observed when Botox or Dysport injections are combined with cosmetic programs. It should be noted that neurotoxin helps to get rid of mimic wrinkles, but is not able to eliminate excess skin. Therefore, in 60-year-old and older patients, it is necessary to start rejuvenation with surgical lifting, removing excess skin without affecting the mimic muscles.

Combination with other wrinkle correction methods

Botox, Dysport injections can be successfully combined with injections of other fillers, as well as injections of PRP cellular rejuvenation. But between these procedures there should be a break – first, injections of Dysport or Botox are made, and after 2 weeks – gels are administered.

Chemical peels should be performed 2-3 weeks after botulinum toxin injection. If the peeling has already been done, then it is necessary to wait for the complete recovery of the skin.

Photorejuvenation is combined with botulinum toxin injections, but it must be remembered that this procedure improves skin drainage and slightly accelerates the elimination of neurotoxin. A positive combination of drugs has been noted with: blepharoplasty, lip reshaping, surgical lifting of the forehead, cheeks and chin and other operations.
