Today, aesthetic correction procedures are popular not only among the fair sex. Men also often turn to aesthetic medicine clinics to improve their appearance. What procedures are most in demand among men, and what are the main features of working with male patients – Svetlana Larkina, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Chief Physician of the Center for Intensive Cosmetology and Anti-Aging Therapy, permanent speaker of international congresses, author of 4 patents in aesthetic medicine, spoke exclusively for estet-portal.com.
How are the approaches to aesthetic correction of men fundamentally different from those of women?
In our "Center for Intensive Cosmetology and Anti-Aging Therapy" predominantly men of a traditional orientation are served, and this is approximately 35-36% of the total number of all our clients. Such men do not come to us for image procedures to change their appearance, but come when they see some age-related changes. Patients do not always apply personally, mostly women worry about their appearance, and being our regular clients, they bring their men to us. The main request from men, and the first thing that brings them to us – this is a drooping of the eyebrows. Men get wrinkles on their foreheads, and they think that if they "turn off" with injections muscles – the forehead becomes smooth. In fact, we need to raise our eyebrows and here we cannot work with the frontal muscle. Wrinkles on the forehead in men appear due to the fact that there is an overhang of the eyelid, and this is – compensatory response. To open his eyes and look around, a man needs to raise his eyebrows, which is what the frontal muscles do. And therefore it is simply and quickly impossible to remove such wrinkles, which I explain to my patients.
As a rule, men are afraid of pain and want the correction to be invisible. I rarely correct a man's lips, mainly in the case when the lips become narrow with age, & nbsp; or in the absence of a dentition or abrasion of teeth. Of course, we explain to them that it is necessary to go to the dentist, but it is expensive, long, and, most importantly, painful, and men are afraid of this. Therefore I always explain to my students that the specificity of the aesthetic correction of men is that they should not be hurt and comfortable.
Men – difficult clients, they really faint at the sight of a needle, but if they trust their doctor – they stay with him for a long time. Men can cheat on their loved ones, but doctors – almost never.
Unlike women, it is more difficult for men to confide in someone, but if a male patient confides in a specialist – it's not even worth the price. They love themselves very much, and for them the main thing – a matter of security, as well as a quick and visible result.
Which aesthetic facial correction procedures are especially in demand among men?
In my practice, I see that botulinum toxin injections in the bridge of the nose and periorbital region, in order to raise the eyebrow, as well as forehead correction, as a rule, with the help of botulinum toxin injections and fillers, are especially in demand. And, of course, the correction of the zygomatic zone is popular in order to restore the volume of the middle zone of the face. These are the most popular procedures, as they are fast, effective and the effect of them lasts for a long time. I have patients who only come twice a year for botulinum toxin injections and fillers. Men very rarely go for permanent cosmetic treatments, so we include cosmeceuticals that will actively care for their skin, tighten it and stimulate fibroblasts without the need for constant intervention by a beautician.
Do you perform aesthetic correction of the neck for men in your practice? When is it needed?
The quality of the neck skin in men is significantly different from that of women, because men have hair follicles, respectively, such skin does not age longer. If a man is overweight, and there is a so-called "second" chin – he grows stubble that hides him, the beard hides the oval of the face, and nothing bothers the man for a long time. But if there is a bite problem, when a man has an underdevelopment of the lower jaw, and the side profile does not look very manly – this is already what we are working with, adding volume to the chin and the angles of the lower jaw. The very quality of the skin of the neck begins to disturb men somewhere after 45 years, that is, when ptosis is already observed. And those men who shave, and who have this problem, want to eliminate it, and turn to experts for help. But in this case, hardware methods are more often used. Men do not want to use thread technologies, and are not ready to do plastic surgery, as scars are visible. Therefore, most often, we work with the neck area using hardware techniques, or we perform botulinum toxin injections in order to turn off platysma and instantly lift for those who have it, and also increase the volume of the chin and the angle of the lower jaw, visually slightly changing the lower third .
What other correction zones are popular and in demand among men?
Hands, namely the quality of the skin of the hands. Men are not afraid of swollen veins, as this is typical for male hands, but dry skin often worries them. The problem arises as a result of improper care, for example, when hands are chapped in winter, or when a man likes to "dig" in your car: the skin of the hands suffers, and men do not use creams. They want a quick procedure such as filler injections or PRP therapy and get instant results so they can see the difference right away.
In your opinion, will aesthetic correction procedures for men become more relevant in the future?
I lived in South Korea for a while, and I was very surprised that they have a higher rate of men seeking aesthetic medicine specialists than women. This is because there are fewer female demographics in Korea and male competition is higher.
According to statistics, there are two women per man over 30 in Odessa. Accordingly, our men are less willing to improve their appearance, because they are already in demand.
But according to the statistics of his "Center for Intensive Cosmetology and Anti-Age Therapy" I see that if earlier men were very ashamed, and even wanted to come on a certain day so as not to intersect with women, now they sit quietly in the lobby, in the waiting area, go to the procedures and leave the office, even if there are traces of intervention. Men now have no complexes, no embarrassment, because looking good today – this is normal, and this is an indicator of success. Therefore, I am sure that the demand for aesthetic correction procedures among men will only increase in the future!
