The shape of the nipple on the female breast is important not only from an aesthetic point of view. Inverted nipples prevent full breastfeeding because the baby cannot grasp the nipple with his lips and keep it in his mouth. Finally, inverted nipples may indicate the development of serious breast diseases in a woman, including cancer, in which the shape of the nipple changes. If the doctor, after careful collection of data, excludes the presence of diseases of the mammary gland, then the patient may be recommended plastic correction of the breast with the formation of a nipple of the correct form.
Patient problems due to inverted nipples
It is customary to talk about inverted nipples with such a feature of the mammary gland, when the nipple is either located at the same level with the areola, or is inverted deep into. In addition to the aesthetic unattractiveness of breasts with inverted nipples and the psychological feelings of a woman about this, in addition to the problem with breastfeeding, inverted nipples also cause other troubles. The absence of a protruding nipple leads to constant irritation of the areola and its maceration, fat and foreign mechanical particles accumulate in the nipple cavity, causing irritation of the delicate skin and its inflammation.
Causes of inverted nipples
From the mammary gland to the breast nipples, small milk ducts approach, between which there are connective tissue fibers attached to the deeper tissues of the mammary gland. If for some reason the bundles of these connective tissue fibers are too short, they pull the nipple into the breast. The reasons why this may happen are as follows:
underdevelopment of the genital organs or pathology in their functioning;
underdevelopment of the lactiferous ducts;
hereditary predisposition;
wearing tight underwear for a long time.
Inverted nipples can be retracted - when they are drawn out during breastfeeding or sexual stimulation, as well as tightly inverted - when they do not protrude above the areola under any circumstances.
Methods of treatment, correction of inverted nipples
Inverted nipples can be corrected surgically and non-surgically. Without surgical intervention, the nipple is pulled out using a special vacuum lining on the mammary gland. The essence of its impact is to try to lengthen the connective tissue fibers, due to which the nipple is pulled forward. In the case of hidden nipples, this is quite an effective method of correction.
If we are talking about tightly inverted nipples, then more radical intervention will be needed for correction. The choice of plastic surgery technique for the correction of inverted nipples depends on whether the patient plans to continue breastfeeding.
If breastfeeding is not planned, then during plastic surgery, the connective tissue bundles are dissected along with the milk ducts. The nipple in this case is no longer held inside the mammary gland and lengthens, but it will no longer be possible to breastfeed the baby.
If the patient wishes to preserve the integrity of the milk ducts, a more complex microsurgical correction is performed, when only connective tissue fibers are carefully dissected through a small incision at the base of the areola, and then the nipple is gently pulled forward and fixed.
Surgery to correct inverted nipples is often combined with breast correction - its shape, size, breast lift. The patient should be warned that after surgery for the correction of inverted nipples, the sensitivity of the nipples and areolas will be reduced for several weeks. In addition, the rehabilitation period, which includes a number of restrictions, also lasts several months after plastic surgery.
