Совет Европы обновил механизм защиты от некачественных медикаментов

The whole world has faced the problem of falsification of medicines - from medical workers to the patient. According to independent sources, the number of non-prescription falsified drugs in pharmacies is: Russia - 34.5%, Ukraine - 29.6%, Belarus - 5.1%, Kazakhstan - 36.9%.

The Council of Europe has prepared and put into effect a convention that is called upon at a qualitatively new, international level to use a mechanism to protect against the transportation of falsified low-quality medicines, as well as other medical products.

The European Committee on Crime Problems (EDQM– European Committee on Crime Problems) has strengthened control over the quality of medical products sold in Europe. On July 1, the Law "On the Ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Combating the Counterfeiting of Medical Products and Similar Crimes Endangering Public Health" came into force.

The entry into force of the Convention against counterfeiting of medical products means that interstate mechanisms for protecting the population from the risk of buying low-quality drugs will be activated at a new level.

The adoption of the Convention will contribute to the introduction of more thorough checks of drug receipts according to the registry lists . It is also expected to revise the current assortment with the removal of units that do not meet accepted standards.

– Countries with closed borders unwittingly exacerbate the problem of medical smuggling. There is a border – there will be unauthorized transportation of anything through it. The lack of legal ways in Europe to regulate this issue regarding medicines creates more and more opportunities for smuggling business, which ultimately leads to a serious threat to the security of European countries. Fortunately, today the planned work of the Council of Europe to combat the illegal transportation of medicines has reached a qualitatively new level, – commented the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Tomasz Boczek. Medicines supplied by unverified distributors who have not confirmed their reliability with the appropriate license will be seized and disposed of.
