The desire to shock others with their appearance makes many go to extreme ways to change their appearance, such as scarring the skin or cutting (split) the tongue.

However, doctors most often have to deal with the consequences of this bloody art, which threatens with various complications, ranging from loss of sensation to gangrene. And all because such operations are most often carried out in private offices, and the masters who do them do not have deep medical knowledge, and the tools they use — sterility.

Intricate decoration: a scar made from patches of own skin and elf ears

Method number 1. Scarification. Scars are known to adorn a man. And not only those who remained after the wounds received in battles. They introduced some tribes, for example, in Guinea, applied them to demonstrate their status. Today, scarification or scarification (from the Latin word "scarification", which translates as "cutting", "scratching") partly replaces tattooing, with the only difference being that it looks more voluminous.

What does it represent? Decorative scars are applied to the body, to create which the skin is cut, and then its shreds are intertwined, like a pigtail, and take root again.

What is dangerous? Improper scarring can lead to keloid scars. Poor sterilization of instruments can lead to blood poisoning, which can lead to gangrene or sepsis.

Method number 2. "Elven" ears or Spock's ears. Representatives of some nationalities believed that the dog is not only a friend of man, but also a deity. And therefore they tried to make the shape of their ears similar to that which is inherent in four-legged ones. True, today such ears are made more by fans of elves.

What does it represent? Some of the cartilage is removed from the ears and the tip is crossed over to create a pointed shape.
What is dangerous? Doctors warn about the inability to return to the original shape of the auricles after the operation.

Introduction under the skin of different bodies: from modding to Botox

Method #3. Modding. The introduction of foreign bodies under the skin, ranging from plastic to gold, allows you to create various three-dimensional patterns. It can be a heart, a ball or a comb protruding above the skin. The popular Botox lip treatment is believed to be a form of modding.

What does it represent? A small incision is made on the skin, through which they are driven & nbsp; objects of various shapes, and then a seam is applied.
Why is it dangerous? Risk zone — whiskey and cheeks. The passage through them of the nerve channels responsible for the mobility of the muscles, in case of their violation, can be lost. For the same reason, the back of the hand should not be decorated. This may cause loss of sensation.

Method number 4. Cutting (split) the tongue. Perhaps the most striking practice among body modifications. In Eastern practices, it was believed that a tongue cut in two made it possible to throw it deep into the throat and prevent the life-giving air from escaping.

What does it represent? The tongue is cut with a scalpel from the very tip to the middle. After the incision has healed, the person becomes the owner of the "snake" language.

What is dangerous? There are two large arteries in the tongue, damage to each of which leads to profuse bleeding. In some cases, a fatal outcome was observed.
