Why do you visit a nail salon? The answer is clear: to get out of there with a beautiful manicure and / or pedicure. However, you should also know that in addition to well-groomed nails, you can take something unpleasant out of the salon.

We decided to tell you what infections you can pick up in a nail salon.

Foot fungus

Athlete's foot – this name is tinea pedis – a fungal infection that often occurs in damp, enclosed environments.

Unfortunately, salon pedicure baths – this is exactly the place that such a fungal infection adores. After all, not all legs that have been in such baths were clean and healthy. Of course, foot baths must be washed after each client. But even in this case, there is no complete confidence in the safety of your feet, since the fungus is not so easy to wash off from the surface on which it grows.

What to do:

Salon – use an antifungal cleaner; Visitors who find themselves with foot fungus should refrain from visiting such places in order to prevent the spread of the fungus.

Warts

These skin formations, which often have a viral etiology (they are caused by human papillomavirus), are transmitted through contact with the patient or objects that he used. The virus enters the human body through cracks and wounds in the skin.

How can you get warts: if a salon worker uses the same pumice stone for different clients. If you do not really trust your salon or for some reason decided to change it, you should pay attention to this detail. But in any case, you can take your pumice stone with you to protect yourself from infection with warts.

Swine flu

The H1N1 virus, which we used to call swine flu, can also be an unpleasant bonus of visiting the salon. The virus lives outside the body for up to 8 hours, that is, theoretically, if a client with flu was served in front of you, the virus can be transmitted to you through contact with a surface near which such a person coughed, sneezed and where the virus could get.

Ideally, salon workers should wear disposable protective gloves for each client, change them regularly, and sanitize tools with antimicrobials.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcal infection can be picked up not only in the hospital, but also in the nail salon. Do not rush to get scared – this happens infrequently. However, you should be aware that symptoms usually appear within 24 hours and are difficult to miss. If your hands hurt, you find it difficult to bend your finger, or you feel discomfort, and the skin around the infected area will crack and fester – seek medical attention immediately.

This infection can be contracted through the use of undisinfected manicure (or pedicure) instruments. As a general rule, such instruments must be soaked in a disinfectant solution for at least 10 minutes, and then treated with a sterilizing agent. The same goes for foot baths.

Mycobacterium fortuitum

This microbacteria can enter your body from foot baths, the risk of infection is increased if you shave your legs before this procedure. To understand that you have picked up such a bacterium, large boils on your toes, foot or leg will help you. Furuncles may be surrounded by smaller formations. Sometimes they can disappear on their own, and in some cases – turn into open wounds. After the wound heals, scars remain on the skin. M. fortuitum infection can only be treated by a doctor with strong antibiotics.

Of course, the infections described above can be contracted not only in the cabin. However, you need to know that danger can await you anywhere, so it’s better to play it safe once again: do not hesitate to ask the salon workers about the procedures for cleaning and disinfecting manicure and pedicure tools. If you are still afraid of catching an infection, bring your tools.
