Music can do wonders. And recent research has shown that audiotherapy can be used as a treatment for postoperative pain.
A study conducted by American scientists showed that children (9-14 years old) who listened to music or audio books for only 30 minutes after radical surgery experienced a significant reduction in pain. Controlling postoperative pain without medication is important because opioid analgesics, the most common way to manage this type of pain, can cause breathing problems in a child. Therefore, large doses of these drugs are dangerous for children, and small doses do not cope with pain properly. Study leader Dr. Santhanam Suresh said: "Audiotherapy is an inexpensive way to minimize pain in children after radical surgery, with no side effects."
The study included 60 children whose pain levels were measured before and after audiotherapy. The researchers explained that a person who does not think about pain feels less pain, and music or an audiobook helps to deceive the brain. Experts note that the choice of music or stories should be made by the patient himself, since, as you know, everyone has different tastes. Another advantage of this therapy is that the patient can continue it independently at home.
The results of this study have been published in Pediatric Surgery.
