Controversy over healthy foods and drinks continues. New superfood diets are constantly emerging that should prolong life and improve well-being. However, when it comes to red wine, everyone seems to agree that a glass of red wine a day is good for your health. But that's not all.
Scientists at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago have published the results of the study in the Alzheimer's Association journal “Alzheimer’s & Dementia”. A study has shown that just one glass of red wine a day can delay dementia and keep the mind sharp.
As you know, cognitive decline – an integral part of the aging process.
Everyone experiences cognitive decline with age. Dr. Martha Claire Morris, a nutritional epidemiology specialist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, said older adults who were on a diet called "MIND", which is a slightly modified Mediterranean diet based on plant-based foods , were mentally 7.5 years younger than participants who did not follow such a diet.
The observational study included 960 adults with a mean age of 81.4 years. Study duration – 4.7 years old.
The MIND diet in question includes:
- whole grains;
- green leafy vegetables;
- olive oil;
- fish;
- beans;
- nuts;
- berries;
- chicken;
- wine.
The following foods are restricted:
- red meat;
- oil;
- cheese;
- margarine;
- sweets;
- baking;
- fried foods and fast food.
The results of the study show that the MIND diet significantly slows age-related cognitive decline, namely, by 53% in participants who strictly adhered to the diet and by 35% in participants who allowed minor deviations from the diet.
Other studies on cognitive decline have also confirmed that even a glass of red wine is high in flavonoids – natural compounds with antioxidant effect that help improve blood circulation and improve cognitive function.
So drink drinkers can safely enjoy a glass of red wine a day while slowing down brain aging and cognitive decline. And in combination with the nutrition suggested by experts, the risk of dementia is reduced even more. However, you should not forget about the measure, remember that addiction to any alcoholic drink leads to the opposite effect!
