We all know about the benefits of sunlight, that the production of vitamin D occurs in our body only under their influence, that sunbathing is an excellent prevention of fungal diseases. But do not forget that "unprepared" skin after winter can react negatively to a large amount of radiation.

Very often, dermatologists are asked about the occurrence of an allergy to the sun, the so-called "sun allergy".

At first glance, the question is incorrect, because it is commonly believed that a sunbeam is not an allergen, since it does not have an allergenic protein. But exposure to the sun is a factor in the accumulation of the allergen in the human body.

How does sun allergy manifest itself on the skin?

When ultraviolet rays hit the skin, they change the chemical structure of substances that are in the thickness of the skin. As a result, these modified compounds provoke sensitization. In this regard, exogenous photodermatitis and endogenous photodermatitis are distinguished.

Sun allergies are more common among young children and fair-skinned people whose skin defense mechanisms are not as strong.

Sun allergy can also occur if a person with sensitive skin used any skin care creams or lotions before going out under the active sun, says estet-portal.com. Substances found in cosmetics often react with ultraviolet rays and cause an allergic reaction.

Sun allergy does not occur in all people, patients with problems of the kidneys, liver, adrenal glands, and the immune system are considered a risk group. Also, the cause of this disease is considered to be medication (these include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, quinidine, amiodarone, fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and many other drugs).

Don't forget about predisposition! For example, people with a lot of freckles or birthmarks should be wary of the sun.

Each person has a different threshold for sensitivity to infrared rays, so to achieve the perfect tan, some need to spend a few hours under the sun, while others need to relax for several weeks on Turkish beaches.

Sun allergy symptoms include:

  • rash in the form of red spots;
  • appearance of blisters that resemble burns;
  • itch.

Signs and Prevention of Sun Allergies

There is also a delayed reaction of the body, which usually occurs 18-20 hours after excessive exposure. If the body is weak and sensitive, it may react with bronchospasm, a drop in blood pressure, an attack of dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness.

The most characteristic symptom of a sun allergy is severe itching, which causes discomfort even with a light touch.

There are simple rules for the prevention of photodermatitis in case of sun allergy:

  • Gradually increase the amount of time you spend in the sun. Let it be 15-20 minutes the first time, then hide in the shade, avoid sun exposure during the hottest part of the day: after 11 am and before 3 pm.
  • Use special cosmetic sunscreens, creams, masks, hide your face under hats.
  • If you are ill, be sure to consult your doctor to see if medications will trigger allergies.
  • Try to minimize the use of deodorants and avoid essential oils and perfumes.

If you notice changes in your skin after exposure to the sun, it may be a sun allergy. See an allergist who can help you resolve this issue.
