Today, many people prefer to change their “decorations” at least temporarily and instead of our, not the most affectionate, winter, contemplate friendlier warm climes, and upon returning home they receive an unpleasant surprise.

"Tourist illness": causes and symptoms

Hot tours and other promotional offers only stir up interest in flying to distant countries, and now many people already know firsthand about weakness and poor health after returning home. It would seem how this happens, because from a vacation a person should return rested and full of energy to go on labor exploits.

This painful condition is often referred to as "tourists' disease", or scientifically "reacclimatization". It occurs when a person returns to his usual habitat after a new climate. This can manifest itself with many symptoms - ranging from a runny nose, insomnia or indigestion, ending with several days of ailments with high fever or changes in blood pressure.

Perhaps, our body should be understood, because you don’t want to return, for example, from the warm embrace of the Red Sea back to your native land, where outside the window it is raining, then sleet, then constant -10 on the thermometer. Moreover, usually during the holidays we sleep more and eat better, which, again, our body likes much more than forced rises at 7 am and snacks on the go.

"Tourist illness": solutions

We would like to give you some tips on how to reduce damage to the body and avoid the unpleasant consequences of rest.

  1. Eat more fruits and berries during your rest, they will help prepare your immune system to resist colds that may lie in wait for you at home.
  2. Plan your return flight so that you have at least one day left to switch from one rhythm of life to another. It is better to rest at home for a day, rather than run straight to work, so that the body has time to endure stress in a more comfortable atmosphere.
  3. Upon returning home, take a loading dose of vitamin C (for an adult 2g, for a child 1g) in tablets or drink tea with rose hips, lemon or ginger with honey - this is a wonderful and tasty prevention. Continue taking your vitamins, only in standard doses, for a few more days to make sure that the danger of a cold is over.
  4. If your diet on vacation was radically different from home, do not rush to switch to your usual food. It is better to treat yourself to light salads, yogurts and cereals for several days than to pay with severe stomach upsets. If you have chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal system, then the first two or three days it is better to sit on a strict diet.
  5. People with chronic diseases will have to pay special attention to their health. If you take drugs constantly and during the rest, their regimen has shifted, then gradually return it to the usual routine.
  6. It is better to plan the flight time according to the direction in which you are flying: if from west to east - choose a morning flight, and from east to west - in the evening, then a sharp change in time zones will not affect you so much. At the same time, the body tolerates flights to the east worse.
  7. If you have to overcome many time zones, then deliberately disrupt your sleep schedule in advance, try to sleep less 48 hours before the flight, ideally only 5-7 hours, and you can "catch up" on the flight by simply sleeping all the way. This exhausts the body, but will help you quickly adjust to the usual rhythm without spending a week on it. But this is a very hard method, so only use it as a last resort, if you can't spend a couple of days adjusting at home, and only if the time difference is more than five hours.

With all this, keep in mind that the farther away from home the rest was and the more the conditions differed from your usual ones, the more symptoms of "travelers' illness" will appear and the more efforts you need to make to endure it without harming yourself. We wish you all a pleasant stay and an even more pleasant return home without consequences for the body.
