In all other cases, you will first need to choose a hair dye. For home coloring, it is better to stop at a color that is 1-2 shades darker or lighter than your natural hair color. Please note that color products can be semi-permanent, long-lasting and tinted. Read the description on the packaging carefully, as semi-permanent and tint paints do not paint over gray hair.

Tint products are suitable for those who are not ready for radical changes and want to freshen up their hair color. They apply like a shampoo, but the color doesn last for a long time.

Resistant dyes can be used to dye your hair no more than once a month. It is worth remembering when you can not dye your hair with chemical dye:

  1. If you have permed your hair, then you can dye your hair only one month after the procedure.

  2. Cannot be used after dyeing hair with henna or basma, as the color may not be what you expect (for example, green or purple).

  3. Do not apply hair dye if the scalp is damaged, scratched or abraded.

After choosing a hair dye, the whole process is divided into three stages: preparation, coloring and care colored hair.

Step 1. Preparation: what you need for home hair coloring

To make coloring easy, prepare everything in advance. Here is a list of what you will need:

  1. 1-2 packages of hair dye. The amount of dye depends on the length and thickness of the hair, for long hair you will need 2 packages.

  2. Old clothes or cape.

  3. Oilcloth on floor. Paint eats into  flooring if you accidentally drip on

  4. Coloring brush and comb.

  5. Bowl for mixing paint and oxidant. Any non-metal utensils, such as plastic ones, will do.

  6. Plastic hair crabs to hold the strands.

  7. A cream or petroleum jelly applied along the hairline to keep the dye from staining the skin.

Step 2. Hair coloring technique at home

Experts recommend doing an allergy test first. Although this is a rare occurrence, it's still not worth the risk. Mix a drop of paint and  oxidizer and apply to wrist. Wait 15-20 minutes. If there is no redness or itching, then this paint is right for you.

Next, read the instructions carefully. It says how to mix the paint and how much time to keep.

How to apply color to hair:

  1. Mix the paint and oxidant according to the instructions, mix well with using a brush.

  2. In most cases, the dye is applied to dry hair. But this point should be clarified in instructions.

  3. Lubricate the skin along hairline with fat cream and make two partings. The first will go from forehead to nape, the second — from ear to ear. As a result, you will get 4 equal parts. Secure each of them with a crab or an elastic band.

  4. Apply paint with a brush along the main parting lines. Then start painting the strands from the back of the head. Here the hair is dyed for the longest time. Dye your temples last, where the hair is thinnest.

  5. The strands are dyed from roots to tips.

  6. After coloring all the strands, distribute the remaining dye along the entire length of the hair and collect it in a bun.

Don't wrap your hair in a plastic bag and towel. Chemical paints do not need additional heat to develop color. On the contrary, it can damage the hair and make it dry.

It is necessary to keep as long as indicated in instructions. Do not rinse off sooner or later, as the pigment needs time to be absorbed into the hair shaft. Wash off the paint with warm water until it becomes transparent. You can use shampoo and don't forget about the balm that comes with the paint. It is applied only to hair along the entire length, avoiding the roots.

Gently blot your hair with a towel and dry it naturally.

Step 3. Hair care after coloring

Dyed hair requires special care. It will be necessary to take care of preservation of color, and health of hair. For this you will need:

  1. Special shampoos and conditioners for color-treated hair. Regular shampoos can remove color much faster, especially with fruit acids.

  2. Once a week, make nourishing masks that will strengthen the hair roots.

  3. Try to use your hair dryer and flat iron to minimumto avoid damaging your hair.

  4. Protect your hair from ultraviolet light and chlorinated water.
