New research has uncovered the physical and psychological factors that significantly increase the risk of lower back pain.
Data published in Arthritis Care & Research (Journal of the American College of Rheumatology) indicates that manual work performed in an uncomfortable position increases the risk of lower back pain by 8 times. Also, people who are distracted at work and who experience fatigue are more at risk of lower back pain.
About 10% of the world's population suffers from back pain at one time or another. Such pain is one of the main causes of disability. This information is published in the report of the World Health Organization.
WHO states that low back pain is a more common problem worldwide than malaria, diabetes or lung cancer. Despite this, effective strategies to prevent such pain have not yet been developed.
"Understanding these factors lead to back pain and managing these risks is the first step in preventing back pain", – explains Dr. Manuela Ferreira.
So the experts decided to conduct a study aimed at identifying a number of causes of acute low back pain.
In this clinical crossover study, researchers recruited 999 participants from 300 primary care sites who experienced acute low back pain from October 2011 to November 2012. Participants were asked to report which of the 12 physical or physiological factors they were exposed to in the 96 hours prior to the onset of back pain.
The likelihood of having an attack of low back pain is significantly increased due to a number of reasons: by 2.7% – from moderate to increased physical activity, by 25.0% – in case of distraction during physical activity. The researchers also found that the risk of back pain is highest from 7 am to noon.
