A ghost or specter is traditionally thought to be the soul or spirit of a deceased person, manifesting itself in visible or other form in real life. Swiss scientists have revealed the neurophysiological roots of the phenomenon of ghosts. It turns out that the whole thing is in our disorders of the nervous system and malfunctions in the brain.

The reason for the feeling that there are invisible beings nearby (angels, ghosts or demons) is most likely due to the fact that the sensory-motor signals of the brain are distorted. These signals take part in the formation of a person's self-awareness, because they collect information about his movements and the location of the body in space.

The work of scientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne began with the fact that they began to examine the brain of each of the 12 subjects who were diagnosed with various abnormalities in the functioning of the nervous system, including epilepsy. Each of the participants at the same time claimed that they had previously encountered otherworldly forces. As a result of the examination, it turned out that in three areas of the brain, such as the insular cortex, the parietal-frontal cortex and the temporal-parietal cortex, the subjects were found to have abnormalities.

But the scientists did not stop there. The second stage of the study was a "dissonance" experiment. Its essence was that the subjects had to wave their hand in front of them, and the robot behind them did the same, while touching the back of a person. At the moment when the patients got used to the robot, the researchers interrupted the synchronism of the movements of the subjects and the machine, the time delay between swings was 500 milliseconds. In the absence of synchronicity, the illusion of a ghostly presence arose. The effect was so strong that many volunteers refused to continue participating in the experiment.

According to neurophysiologists, the human brain system can fail. This is due to disorders of the nervous system or, as in the robot experiment, due to dissonant actions. In this case, a person may have a second image of his own body and perceive it not as his own, but as someone else present nearby.
