Scientists have found that red wine, nuts and chocolate can be used to combat osteoporosis.
Resveratrol, a natural compound found in grapes and mulberries, cocoa powder, peanuts, and red wine, has anti-inflammatory properties that are effective in strengthening bones, at least in mice and rats.
Danish scientists reported that this compound, which is a type of natural oxybenzene, increases spinal density in men with metabolic syndrome associated with inflammation that causes osteoporosis.
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by risk factors such as high blood pressure or obesity, which increase the risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart disease.
The study was the first to discover the potential of resveratol as a treatment for human osteoporosis. This compound has been found to stimulate bone-forming cells.
Researchers measured bone mineral density and signs of bone formation in men around the age of 66 with metabolic syndrome. For 16 weeks, the men took 500 mg of resveratol twice a day, 75 mg of resveratol, or a placebo. As early as four months, scientists noted a significant increase in bone mineral density in men taking a higher dose of resveratol, as well as an increase in the marker of bone formation - BAP.
The results are promising, but more studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of long-term treatment.
