Society requires more and more brain activity from a person. The crazy flow of information makes the brain process data several times faster than it did a century ago. To get a job in a stable and progressive company, you need to show the highest level of IQ. Scientists are trying to reveal the secrets of the development of our intellect, to prove the most incredible assumptions, but some aspects remain myths, unconfirmed, but in which many believe, they begin to train their abilities so much that the process shows the opposite results.
Over the past years of scientific progress, the latest developments in the field of diagnostics of our body and the conclusions of medical researchers are gradually approaching an understanding of the complex work of the brain, studying the possibilities of human intelligence. Although the research results find adherents, both from the fans and those who are categorically against it. Therefore, many facts grow into myths, and remain fiction, find refutation in scientific works. Let us consider which possibilities of the human intellect are facts, and which are only fantasy.
1. A person uses only a small part of the capacity of his brain
This fact is a myth today, because the possibilities of human intellect are always manifested in full. Previously, it was assumed that only 10% of the brain is used for work, because the body "turns on" protective functions that prevent overloads. There are several options for refuting this myth. Option number 1 – for the full functioning of the brain, 20% of the energy of our body is needed, which is already clear – this amount of energy cannot be expended when only 10% of the brain is working. Option number 2 – with the help of MRI, scientists could not detect even the slightest bit of inactivity in the brain. Option number 3 – if we used 10% of the possibilities, then with brain injuries, a person would not even notice any consequences, but this is not so.
What do scientists say today? With the help of tomography (magnetic resonance and positron emission), one can observe the work of the brain center live and study the level of workload. So the indicators did not reveal sleeping points in the brain during the execution of tasks. To perform this or that action, the brain uses all its resources that are available at that time.
2. The bigger the brain, the smarter the person
In ancient times, it could be assumed that mental abilities directly depend on the size of this organ. Aristotle said that the human brain, when compared with the body, is the largest. This is a myth that has been dispelled for a long time. The possibilities of a person's intellect cannot depend on the size of the brain.
3. One of the hemispheres in a person develops to a greater extent
This statement has been introduced to us since school. Some students are more inclined towards mathematical and computational disciplines, while others have the so-called creative, humanitarian intelligence. Anyone who can write poetry cannot calculate formulas normally. It's definitely a myth. The brain does share its functions between the hemispheres. It may be believed that the right hemisphere is responsible for emotions and creativity, and the left – for logic. But it is worth considering that even for the simplest performance of a mathematical or philological task, all the resources of our brain are needed. There is no way one hemisphere can work, and the other is inactive.
4. Cells in the brain do not regenerate
There was a certainty that we are born with an already predisposed system of cells in the brain, and that by old age the cells only die, cannot be restored. In fact, scientists have recently shown that even as we get older, new brain cells can form. From the age of 2 to 11, the brain is able to develop at a faster pace, then the speed simply decreases, but the development does not stop. There is the concept of neurogenesis, that is, the formation of new brain cells. This origination occurs in a region of the brain called the hippocampus (hippocampus).
5. After damage, the brain cannot fully function
Any violation of the integrity of the brain is fraught with a complete failure to work, since all parts are interconnected and depend on each other. If you get a traumatic brain injury and damage the brain, then it is impossible to restore impaired functions. This is a myth, because if one part of the brain is injured and cannot function properly, nearby tissues can take over and repair, although this requires a lot of effort and resources from the person. After a blow, a person can get a concussion, but such a violation can be cured. It will take a lot of time for a full recovery, but it’s still real. Many people, after suffering a stroke, restore limb mobility, the ability to speak. Even our brain can heal itself, that is, form new connections and grow new cells.<
Therefore, don't panic, don't start to develop your abilities madly or lose heart because of the injury, there is a way out, you just need to find it.
