Александр Туркевич: Трансгендеры – люди, которые прошли через сильную боль

Transgender  – these are people who at birth received an "erroneous" set of chromosomes. Despite this, they do everything possible to feel in their body, to find harmony with themselves and the outside world. Fortunately, modern aesthetic medicine can help them with this.

Having decided to change their appearance, and therefore radically change their lives, these people often face a lot of difficulties and misunderstanding on the part of their closest people and society as a whole. But they consciously take this step in order to finally feel in their body.

Dermatovenereologist, oncologist, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Family Medicine, Polyclinic Affairs and Dermatovenereology, Lviv National Medical University named after. Danila Galitsky, Professor of Dermatovenereology at the University of Rome «J. Marconi» Alexander Turkevich decided to delve into this topic, draw public attention to it and do everything possible to help such patients become happy.

How did you start working with transgender people

A.T. About 1.5-2 years ago. I am the Scientific Director of the Congress of Aesthetic Medicine Specialists. And my task – drawing up a scientific program. We need something interesting, new for doctors. And I had the idea to do a session that would reveal the facial transformations of people of non-traditional orientation.

This idea came up, but it was crude and I didn't understand how to develop it. But I was very interested in the topic of transgender people. And then I flew to the Baltic states via Minsk for work. And at the airport, she sits down in front of me (I didn’t understand right away), sort of like a girl, but her clothes, demeanor and facial features were masculine. With my specialty, it’s impossible to understand whether it’s a man or a woman – strange.

I looked at the boarding pass and saw that it was – young woman. I decided to ask a question: “Girl, I am a doctor, I have such a specialty. I'm interested in different things, and I want to ask you one question. Perhaps he is tactless: if you do not want – Do not answer. I see that you – girl, and it says so in your boarding pass. But you are trying to emphasize masculine features with your demeanor. What does this have to do with it? There was a pause of about three seconds (it was not in vain that I warned that I was asking out of good intentions).

After that, the following dialogue took place:
– I have a diagnosis.
– Even though I am a doctor, I cannot remember all the diagnoses. Can you decipher?
– I – transgender, - the girl answered.
– And what does the diagnosis have to do with it?
– We consider this a mental diagnosis.

Then I was a little outraged, but I began to be interested in this topic. We landed in Minsk, I immediately called the partners and said that I had found the topic. They first asked if I was sure and if we would not be beaten. But I made sure that it is – good topic, we will work with it and cover it.

And then I began to communicate with transgender people, not only as patients, but also as ordinary people. Probably, this topic became interesting to me, because I – the male. I work with patients who are M to F (male to female) – with those who were born in a male body, but want to become women.

Transgender woman: psychological characteristics of such patients

Inside themselves they – really women. They do not come to this and do not become like that, they are born that way. If we talk about transgender people, then these are people who have gone through severe pain.

What is special about your assistance to transgender people?

Let's try to extrapolate this to another field of medicine. People are born with heart defects, right? Nobody condemns them – they are operated on. People are born with 6 fingers or without fingers, they are sympathized, and no one condemns them. Here a person was born with organs that he personally did not need, and he lacks those that he would need.

When a person is born with a heart defect, everyone wants to help him. These people were born with a different vice – their inner essence does not coincide with the outer. And if we can do something to help, name at least one reason why this should not be done? I like to make women more beautiful if it makes them happy.
