The shape of the breast is very important for a woman, and if for some reason she has a pronounced asymmetry of the breast, this fact gives her severe psychological suffering, prevents her from socializing, arranging her personal life. Breast asymmetry can be caused by various reasons. Different breasts can be a birth defect, a consequence of injuries and various diseases. The shape of the breast may differ quite a bit, and sometimes the asymmetry of the breast is very pronounced. Each case requires an individual surgical solution to the problem.
Types of breast asymmetry and causes of its development
Breast asymmetry is that the left and right breasts of a woman differ in size, shape, structure, as well as the location, shape and size of the areola and nipple. Breast disproportion usually refers to aesthetic defects, that is, it does not cause physical suffering or pain to a woman, but greatly reduces the quality of her life.
Normally, in any person, the left and right sides of the body do not develop quite symmetrically, the same applies to the shape of the chest. If we are talking about a slight difference in the volume of the left and right breasts, this deficiency does not require surgical correction. At the request of a woman, in this case, to restore symmetry, such corrective measures as wearing special underwear, massage, myostimulation, mesotherapy to strengthen breast tissues can be applied.
Causes for the development of significant breast asymmetry can be:
- diseases of the mammary glands;
- hormonal disorders;
- mechanical injuries, scars, burns of the chest;
- congenital malformations of the breast;
- congenital hypoplasia of breast tissue;
- consequences of breast augmentation surgery;
- improper breastfeeding.
Breast asymmetry can be mild (the difference in breast shape is almost invisible to others), medium (the size of the mammary glands differs by a third) and severe (one breast is half the size of the other).
The breasts may differ in structure - one is hemispherical in shape, and the other is tubular in structure (an elongated tube with a stretched areola). Sometimes both breasts are tubular, but different in size.
- According to the size of the chest, there may be such options:
- one breast is normally developed, the other is poorly developed: endoprosthesis replacement of an underdeveloped breast is required;
- one breast is normally developed, the other is hypertrophied: reduction mammoplasty of an excessively large breast is required;
- one breast is not developed at all, the other is hypertrophied: reduction mammoplasty is required in combination with endoprosthetics.
It is possible to lower a normally developed breast to a different level or severe mastoptosis of one breast - in this case, mastopexy is performed, sometimes in combination with reduction and implant placement.
Surgical correction of breast asymmetry
Before correcting breast asymmetry, you need to make sure that there are no contraindications to such an operation, get advice from a mammologist and an oncologist. A preliminary conversation with the patient is very important, during which her expectations from breast correction are clarified, a preliminary computer simulation of the future shape of the breast and its size is performed, the incision site, shape and type of implant are discussed.
The patient should be aware that the correction of the shape of the breast and the correction of breast asymmetry carries significant risks that can only be avoided by scrupulously following the doctor's recommendations for the rehabilitation period and further lifestyle.
