Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that studies the structure and function of an endodontist. Endodontium consists of pulp and dentin. Endodontics studies methods and methods of manipulation in the oral cavity in case of trauma, periodontal disease and pathological changes in the pulp. There are 3 treatment approaches in endodontics – preventive endodontics, conservative and surgical endodontics. Creating an airtight barrier between the oral cavity and periapical tissues is the main goal of endodontic treatment. Find out the main stages of endodontic treatment in our article.

The role of endodontics in dental practice. Application aspects of endodontic methods

Endodontics appeared in the late 40s as a new direction in the practice of therapeutic dentistry. Since then, endodontic manipulations have been considered the basis of dental treatment for pulpitis and periodontitis.

Endodontic interventions are among the most complex manual procedures.

In endodontic intervention, it is important to follow the sequence of manipulations. The dentist needs to have a device to check the viability of the pulp, and it is also important to be able to determine the depth of penetration of dental instruments into the root canal. To solve these issues, X-ray installations and processing devices are used. Recently, dental offices are equipped with radiovisiographs.

Endodontics. Stages of endodontic treatment. Fundamentals of tooth preparation

The main stages of endodontic treatment in modern dentistry include the preparation of tissues that limit the root canals and the tooth cavity; irrigation of the endodontic cavity and obturation of the root canals.

Cavity preparation is carried out using diamond and carbide burs on  turbine tips.

The next stage of endodontics in dentistry – mechanical processing of the root canal. This stage is carried out in order to ensure the possibility of filling the tooth cavity with a root filling after cleaning and giving the canal the correct conical shape.

Preparation in endodontics has the following goals:

  • maximum preservation of tooth anatomy;
  • preserve the taper of the canal preparation;
  • using a uniform expansion to give the channel a three-dimensional conical shape;
  • Create an apical stop at the working depth of the canal.

What are the two final stages of endodontics?

After the preparation of the teeth, irrigation and obturation begin. Irrigation is based on drug treatment of all canal systems. This removes bacteria from the canal systems, apical canals and deltas. The organic substrate is also removed to prevent bacterial re-growth.

Obturation is a hermetic filling of the canals of a tooth. The process depends on the complexity of the structure of the canal system of a particular patient, as well as on the effectiveness of the preparation of the canal and irrigation.

At the last stage of endodontics, the canals are dried with paper points and turundas, then the filling process begins, which is carried out under constant X-ray control. Then restoration is carried out.
