Iovera or Frotox is a toxin-free treatment often referred to as the next generation of Botox. The results of frotox are preserved for 3 months.

The procedure, which is proudly called the next generation of Botox, is based on cryoneuromodulation technology. The 15-minute procedure involves placing a device filled with liquid nitrogen next to the nerves that control the muscles that cause wrinkles. Intense cold shock puts the nerves into "hibernation" for up to 4 months, so the muscles relax and wrinkles are smoothed out.

Frotox is said to be great for those patients who are afraid of needles, as the procedure is fast, a closed-end needle is used, and patients feel pressure during insertion, not pain or cold. They also note the high accuracy of directing the frotox to the nerves, which means that the facial muscles remain mobile and are still involved in the creation of facial expressions.

"Liquid nitrogen freezes targeted nerves in the forehead and between the eyebrows," says plastic surgeon Harley Street, who oversaw testing and refining the California lab's procedure for over a year. Unlike Botox, which takes four days to take effect, the effect of Frotox is immediately noticeable and lasts up to four months. And since nitrogen is already present in our body, you do not introduce foreign substances into your body system.

How does Iovera work?

This is a targeted cryotherapy that uses the power of cold to be applied to precise targets. High-pressure liquid nitrous oxide flows at a very high speed through a thin 27G closed-end needle. At the tip of the needle, the nitrous oxide turns into a gas that draws heat energy from the surrounding tissue to form a precise zone of cold.

First trials showed that all trial participants saw wrinkle smoothing after the treatment.

Dr. Rainina Zarb Adami said: "The effect is immediate. As far as I know, the procedure is used mainly on the forehead, the entry point is near the temple. Looks promising."

Dr. Vincent Wong, a practitioner at Advanced Medical Aesthetics and an educator in aesthetic medicine who also performs the procedure, added: “Iovera is the world’s first non-toxic wrinkle treatment. cannot be compared to Botox or any botulinum toxin, but instead we should think of it as an additional option available to patients, especially those who do not agree to or cannot receive Botox injections due to medical contraindications."

True, it will not be possible to save money on frotox, since their cost with botox is approximately the same.

In the meantime, the beauty world is actively discussing the latest anti-aging procedure, not everyone is sure of its success. Dr. Dennis Volf, director of Joint Medical at a private practice, stated:

"Cryotherapy, which is what is called frotox, freezes the nerves of the face to smooth out wrinkles. There is a certain level of uncertainty about this procedure, as it is expected that the drug will hit exactly the right nerves. However, I find this procedure less predictable than Botox. Practitioners have been familiar with Botox for over 30 years, moreover, most buyers know that it is safe and effective. We are also aware of the possible side effects associated with its administration. I believe that more research is needed regarding the long-term effects and potential benefits of Frotox before claiming to be a safe alternative to Botox Botox remains the best option for wrinkle smoothing – it is predictable, safe and permanent".
