In the Middle Ages, there was a belief that a bride should go down the aisle with perfectly smooth skin. To do this, they boiled sugar syrup, where lemon juice was added. Subsequently, the entire body of the bride was covered with this sweet liquid, and when she, cooling down, captured every hair on her body, she was immediately rolled up, while pulling out everything, even the thinnest hairs. Today, shugaring (namely, this is what sugar hair removal is called) is rather an exotic procedure than a familiar one. However, the problems of excessive hair growth worries women, as they did many centuries ago, says dermatologist, doctor of medical sciences, professor Olga Bogomolets.

Why is there too much hair

— Olga Vadimovna, how can you explain the appearance of excess hair on the female body?

How hirsutism manifests itself and what causes it

— As you know, the hormonal background of a woman is determined by female hormones (estrogens) and male hormones (testosterone). If for some reason one of them begins to prevail, the body immediately responds to such an imbalance by showing unwanted hairs on the body. With hirsutism, that is, excessive hair growth, they appear not only in areas of secondary sexual characteristics, but also in those areas where they should grow only in men, — in the area of the mustache, chin, cheeks, chest, abdomen.

The latter especially gives a woman additional trouble, and often psychological complexes. She will not allow herself to go to the sauna or swimming pool, she will refuse to relax at sea, and she will choose clothes that will hide her body as much as possible. And although true hirsutism occurs only in 10 percent of cases, according to surveys, 40 percent of women believe that they have increased body hair, and use a large number of methods, including medications, in an attempt to remove hairs.

— But it is probably possible to restore the hormonal background of a woman's body with the help of an endocrinologist…

— Of course, the cause of an imbalance of hormones in the body can sometimes be gynecological or endocrine diseases, which entail male-pattern hair growth in a woman. With such problems, a woman needs to be examined by a gynecologist, endocrinologist to find out the cause of unwanted hair growth. A gynecologist, an endocrinologist treats the disease and eliminates the cause of increased hair growth, and a dermatologist — its consequences, thereby returning beauty and attractiveness to a woman, because, as we know, in most cases, women are worried about the manifestation of external signs of hirsutism.

— Is this problem always medical?

— No, there is also such a thing as hypertrichosis. This is excess hair that is not dependent on hormones and is not associated with masculinity. Hypertrichosis can be congenital and acquired, and its causes are divided into 2 groups depending on the local or general manifestations of the disease. Local hypertrichosis can appear in places of irritation, injections, under a cast, after bites. General hypertrichosis can be: congenital (affects the whole body); due to the intake of various medications; associated with malignant neoplasms of internal organs. You can determine this or that degree of the disease by contacting a doctor.

The most effective methods of dealing with the manifestation of unwanted manifestations of hirsutism

— Today, there are a variety of types of hair removal. Which of them are the most effective in case of hirsutism?

— Indeed, today many beauty centers offer electro and photo epilation, various chemical methods such as wax, shugaring, resin, various creams and ointments, but all these procedures stop hair growth only for a while, and, unfortunately, are not always safe. . Today, the only method that allows you to completely stop hair growth is laser exposure. However, the disadvantage is that the laser affects only the hair containing the melanin pigment, which gives it a dark color, i.e. laser cannot remove light or gray hair.

— What about photoepilation? Today, many salons offer this method, but few patients understand the difference between laser and photoepilation…

— The laser wavelength is clearly fixed, for example for ruby – 694 nm, for alexandrite – 755 nm, and is selectively absorbed by target cells, which reduces the risk of side effects. Thus, the laser acts exclusively on the melanin substance found in dark hair. The energy of the light beam is absorbed by melanin, turns into heat, as a result of which the hair follicle sticks together, and thus the hair follicle is destroyed. After that, the hair just falls out within 6-10 days after the procedure. Newly sprouted hair that was not in the active growth stage during the first procedure is processed in subsequent sessions. With each procedure, the hair grows back less and less.

For photoepilators, conditionally called lasers, operating on flash lamps, the covered wavelength range is from 510 to 1020 nm, which allows them to be used also for the treatment of vessels and age spots, but accordingly reduces selectivity, so it is difficult to predict side effects and complications after the procedure. Accordingly, photoepilation as a method of hair removal is less effective and safe, very often after photoepilation, hyperpigmentation appears in the form of dark spots in the treatment areas.
