Diabetes is considered not so much a diagnosis as a way of life.  And this is not in vain, because a patient with diabetes must do some procedures every day, which he urgently needs. In addition to strict adherence to diet and taking the necessary drugs, such patients should measure their blood sugar every day at a frequency of several times a day to control it in order to prevent the development of coma. The process of measuring blood sugar is an unpleasant procedure, and for many patients it significantly impairs the quality of life. To solve this problem, scientists have developed a new method for measuring blood sugar.

What problems do patients with diabetes experience when measuring blood sugar?

Patients with type 2 diabetes must constantly take drugs that make cells more sensitive to insulin. Patients with type 1 diabetes should strictly take insulin and monitor their blood glucose several times a day.

Thus, the patient is advised to measure his blood sugar daily to prevent the development of coma and other complications. Many patients have a glucometer, which, of course, is convenient to use and allows you to get results right away. But there are people with different phobias - for example, they are afraid of the sight of blood, especially their own. And others simply cannot tolerate the procedure of piercing the skin and have not tolerated the procedure for taking blood from a finger since childhood. But if healthy people do this once a year, then patients with diabetes have to measure blood sugar several times a day, which is a certain discomfort and psychological problem.

A new method for measuring blood sugar has been invented

Health scientists at the University of California have developed temporary tattoos for diabetics to make life easier. Tattoos are a patch that sticks to the skin. Such "tattoos" completely painless. They consist of an electrode printed on thin paper, which is designed for tattoos. The patient can independently dispose of it after use.  This method for measuring blood sugar is quite simple and convenient.

Blood sugar patch specification:

  • has the form of a film with electrodes that can be easily glued to the skin;
  • the electrodes are protected by a film, so it can be wetted;
  • the only drawback and slight inconvenience is that the device does not have a screen on which the result would be displayed. Therefore, each time to view the result, the film must be removed and connected to a special device.

Verification of the effectiveness of a new method for measuring blood sugar

The device has been tested on seven healthy men aged 20 to 40 years. Before eating different foods, they put on a sensor to measure blood sugar. All results were compared with glucometer readings and they matched.

Today, scientists are working to ensure that the device has a Bluetooth connection to be able to broadcast information to a mobile device. Scientists are confident that such a device will greatly simplify the procedure for measuring blood sugar, and patients will be able to immediately assess the level of glucose, which will prevent the development of hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic coma.

The developers hope that the device will become an indispensable thing for every diabetic patient, and blood sugar measurement will no longer be such an unpleasant procedure that it can reduce the number of complications.
