Chin surgery is rarely performed for medical reasons. This usually happens with congenital defects in the structure of the lower jaw or injuries that significantly deform the face, including the chin. Plastic surgeons note that often patients come to the appointment with a desire to change something in the area of the nose or cheeks in order to make the face more attractive. And it does not occur to them that if their small chin is corrected, then the whole appearance will completely change. An underdeveloped small chin makes the face unattractive, and mentoplasty can completely change the patient's life, giving clarity and harmony to facial features.
What features define a small chin
Usually, they talk about a small chin when it does not correspond to the general proportions of the face, significantly inferior in size to the nose, forehead, cheekbones, or when the jawline is strongly beveled and the lower jaw immediately smoothly passes into the neck.
One of the signs of a harmonious face is considered to be a slightly protruding chin. The height of the chin should be about half the height of the lower third of the face. If, when studying the patient's profile, draw a horizontal line through the lower edge of the orbit and the auditory meatus, and the vertical – through the deepest point on the bridge of the nose, then the correct chin should slightly protrude beyond the set framework. Otherwise, it may be considered a small chin, especially if the bite is not broken.
In older patients, chin reduction may occur due to bone loss and soft tissue atrophy.
Methods that correct a small chin
There are quite a lot of methods by which a small chin can be corrected, so the right one is selected strictly individually for each patient. Before the start of the operation, a computer 3D modeling of the shape of the future chin is performed. If necessary, rhinoplasty, contouring of the lower third of the face, cheekbone augmentation, neck correction, face oval lift are additionally recommended.
Chin plasty consists either in increasing one's own bone to the missing volume, or using an implant, or using lipofilling.
Implants are the most frequently used, mentoplasty has a fairly wide range of developments in this area.
Small chin extension can be performed due to titanium plates or implants – silicone or polypropylene. The most commonly used silicone implants have a porous surface. They can be made for a specific patient and the shape that is needed, securely attached and do not slip off. Installation can be carried out through an incision under the lower jaw, and through a crease in the oral cavity between the lower lip and the mucous membrane of the teeth.
After the operation, the patient may feel pain, numbness, slight swelling in the chin area. The final result is evaluated no earlier than three months after chin plastic surgery.
